A couple of months ago when I went up to Smiths Lake, I was tossing some small plastics around hoping for some flathead or bream. Nothing.
I then decided I would try something. I took the plastic off the jig head and replaced with a small fillet of slimey mackerel I had brought along for the ride. I cut the piece from the flank and up towards the vertebral column, so the thick part would be where the jig head was and the flank (floppy) part where the point of the hook was. Exactly like a normal plastic jig. Well....3 large bream in a matter of 15 minutes. Retrieved it just like an SP, with drop and retrieve, but with the added bonus of smell and taste.
I am sure someone else has tried this......

Yep I quite often slip a bit of bait on if I only have jigheads, I usually use the bait I found around me like cunji, shellfish etc seems to work ok.

I have sometimes put bits of bait onto my jigheads or even a tiny piece onto a sp if I am not getting any touches and I think a 'different' smell might entice something to bite. Can't say I have had any better luck with my "improvements".

Stayed at Sandbar then closer to Forster. So easy taking the kayak out onto the lake. Very shallow lake in most areas, then you hit areas where the line seems to pay out forever. The bream coming out of the lake are quite pudgy, indicating probably there is a lot of food around. Caught them around dusk, close to a little island in the middle of the lake. Great fun on light gear.
Cheers

Simon, I used to have a mate, whose parents had a house on Lake Maquarie. He loved fishing with a jig head and a tail he made from squid tubes. We would cut a few thin strips at the end like legs ect and work them like a SP. He used to get some huge flathead. He also did the same thing off the rocks and the kings loved it.

Catch ya Scott
