Hi guys,

Just finished a prototype, asymmetrical touring/fishing pirogue.

Specs are.

Length overall 46mm
Waterline Length 4300mm.
Max beam 710mm
Max bottom width 635mm
Bow height 290mm
Centre height 254mm
Stern height 275mm
Rocker – fore & aft 26mm

She paddles like a kayak, is quicker than my swampgirl, tracks beautifully, has good stability and lots of room. Can also be used as a tandem tourer and is my latest effort to find a good compromise for fishing skinny water.

The build story with piccies can be viewed here. The thread rambles a bit but the forum is mainly for old farts like me and we do that sometimes.

http://www.neilbank.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2940

I hope to get some blood on the gunwales this week end.

Some piccies.

Thanks guys, :D

I'm pretty pleased with the way this one has turned out.

Very nice Mick
Does the basic design vary much from the Parogue on Uncle John's site?
Hi karl, the build methodology is a little different. My boat has considerably more load capacity. :D

The structural differences are that a U.J. job requires three permanent hull frames and cut stem pieces. (The stem pieces would be impossible without access to a table saw) Jem's don't. :D

There is a bit more marking out and stitching with Jems.

Rocker on a UJ works out at about 65mm - mine is 25mm

The differences are subtle' but both are beautifully simple boats to build with hull performance that makes a mockery of the real complex hull shapes so in vogue with builders at the moment.

The prototype seems a little short, being 46mm. I guess you'll be making a full size one sooner or later?

Once again, you have done a beautiful job. The boat seems quite simple in shape so it is interesting you say you are getting good performance. Sometimes simple is better. That is what I tell my wife when she critisises me for forgetting stuff or doing things wrong. She needs to recognise the truth in me words.

Looks great Mick. Whats the stability like? Those seats seem to be up high - maybe i'm just used to seeing the SOT yaks where you're right down near the water...

Thanks guys,

Scotty,

Stability is pretty typical of a flat mottomed canoe. initial is pretty good.

It only a flat water boat and doesn't need great secondary stability. Having said that, I am aware that they have been used in some mild rapids in the US and seem to work OK for them.

The Yanks like to sit very close to the bottom of these boats. Like that, stability is excellent. I like to sit a little higher (150mm) so it is not rock solid but still quite good.

Mick, you've raised the bar again. The level of workmanship has progressed with each boat. Can't wait to see the next one.
Thanks Tony :D The next one is still on the drawing boards. it will be a quick, solo tripping canoe - big water capable :D and I am getting pretty excited about it. The concept drawings are looking real sweet :D :D

G'day Chis, thanks mate. :D

Quick approximate thumbnail

Epoxy & hardner X 4kgs .......................................$130.00

Graphite ..............................................................$ 30.00

Fibreglass matt X 11metres ..................................$130.00

cheap ply X 2 sheets 2000 X 1200 X 4mm...............$ 30.00

42 X 12 X 20 metres cheap fingerjoint pine.............$ 20.00

Sundry bits & pieces.............................................$ 30.00

About $370.00 give or take a little. :D :D :D I reckon that makes a pretty cheap 15 foot canoe.

I've just been admiring those sweet simple lines of ya new craft and the artificial wood finish that looks the real thing. . . . What! It is real wood? You are no doubt a crafstman as well as a gentleman. :D

Yup, you do a great job, HairyMick. If it were mine, I would have it somewhere I could look at it from time to time just to admire its finish.

Wow Hairy, that looks great. If it swims half as good as it looks you have really excelled.

Must be great satisfaction for you after all that work. Enjoy.
