Hi yakkers

I ended up choosing a GPS unit from eBay (Magellan 210), however when I got it I found it was imported, hence it was loaded with USA maps which ended up being pretty useless, I spoke to magellan and they quoted me a further $299 to upload the right maps......well, what an expensive exercise that would have been. I went back to the seller and I guess I scared him when i asked if his medical policy was paid up (no not really, but was tempted) anyway I got my money back.

I guess I say all the above to warn potential purchases that be mindfull of imports, this seller had misleading info in the product description.

Anyway, back on the happy side, I have taken some advice from previous posts (and thanks to Paffoh aka Derek) i have chosed the Garmin 76s unit! found a reputable supplier who provide free map uploads all for a reasonable cost...........happy days!

Aleg75: Have had the same problem. I purchased an Eagle Cuda 250/Smap, Sonar/Gps unit. Came from the USA and has fantastic mapping for the USA; however, I can't paddle that far! I too have checked local and have been told that the Cuda can not be upgraded or changed. Still trying to talk with the manufacture. Bloody thing must have a chip in it that could be changed.

Dont thank me man, thank Garmin and thank god you got your moolah back :)

Good to hear it has turned out ok, sad to hear it happned in the first place... sounds like the seller folded due to principal, pretty good of him even if you did have to express concern heavily...

Anyway enjoy mate :p

I was looking for a sounder/GPS combo recently and found the AUS prices just too inflated compared with overseas prices. I bought an Eagle IGPS from the States at less than half the price of its RRP in Oz (US$500 compared with AU$1400). Even if I forked out the extra $200 for the Australian maps I would still be hundreds in front (obviously the more expensive the unit you are looking at the greater the benefit in sourcing outside Oz).

With Eagle GPS units you can upload your own GPS files from a low cost multi media card (MMC). The GPS files can be made at no cost with some of the freeware programs available on the web (such as GPSU). Let's face it - we tend to fish in the same few places each time so there is scarcely a need for GPS mapping around the entire Australian coastline.
