Hello,

I am giving away this wood strip Kayak to a good home.
The cockpit needs to be cut and it needs fiber glassing.

Length is 5.2 m and width at cockpit is 62 cm . probably a Great Auk.

Inspections welcome, I live 1-hour drive south from Sydney.

Looks god gui. Looks like alot of work went into it. I tried to convince a mate that is strapped for cash & wanted a kayak, but he was set on a plastic fantastic.

I'm sure it would be great fun. I would have taken it off your hands if I hadn't have already half filled the garage with kayaks.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies

The reason is that it was given to me like that, and I realised I don't have the time or energy to finish it, (and the space to store it).
I'll try eBay and Gumtree .. If nothing works.. it will end up as fire wood eventually :(
I keep the kegs, I always have energy for making homebrew ;-)

Cheers

Looks like Paulownia and WRC, which make beautify kayaks when strip planked. Someone has to pick this thing up and finish it, or I will drive down to Sydney myself.

If anyone from Adelaide is considering transporting it that far I would be happy to help finish it. Looks like it needs the deck and hull glassed then joined, cockpit rim built, bulkheads/seat/footbraces added and finally varnish. May need external stems as well - not sure from the pics - but it's all doable with basic tools and some time/space.

For more info on this design see Nick Schade's Guillemot website (looks like it would suit a lot of people):

Too big for my workspace and too far away for me :( .

Whereabouts south of sydney. I live on the central coast but work in canterbury and I have a truck so transporting it would not be an issue just deciding if I tell the wife or not or just hope she doesn't go into the shed

Hi Pashtar did you end up picking up the kayak? How is the kayak comming along? I am building a nick shade microbootleeger myself and have just finished stripping the hull. Would love to see some pics.

Looks like Nashovsky only joined to get rid of it - has only 4 posts and they are all in this thread. Nothing since.

Pashtar has a few more but none since this thread either - he may be busy finishing off the kayak.

Plug, how about some pics of your sabalo kitted out - and hopefully some from the build and on the water. Saw the finished product on Jem but it's always good to see how things went as well - a build log always helps someone else.

And as for build logs - Noddy are you documenting your microbootlegger anywhere? That design is a thing of beauty and it would be good to watch one come together. Even if you don't use it for fishing it would go well in this forum.

Lab Rat,

After much Drawing and cutting we went from this

to this

with a bit more work I got to here

and then glassing

and then the leak test, found a few, but that was expected

to the finished

now if I can just get some good weather that coincides with time allowed away from the family and work I may be able to get some more pictures of it on the water

Thanks for that Plug - some interesting things in the background of those photos. Is it a boat building school / class?

Looks like the bottom panel of a pirogue with a puzzle joint in the middle of it leaning against the back wall, another couple of kayaks and 2 dinghies as well - a good hit for the wooden boat addict :D .
