Hi Guys,

Firstly, Awesome forum you got here, spent too much of yesterday reading posts when I should have been working :?

Based In Far North of NZ, yak fisher for just over a year now targeting Eagle rays and small sharks (for the pot).

I'm Captain and crew of the fishing vessel SharkBait, a battered Swing fitted with livebait tank, GPS, sounder, and modular clip ons of lights for floundering and a rig for bowfishing (Rays in the shallows).

PB fish is being towed for 4km by a nice 39lb Eagle.

Back to trawling my way through some more posts before work...

Hi Dodge,
Usual Bowfish setup, except I modified a fibreglass electric fence standard into a good solid arrow (usual sliding kit and barb). Instead of using the bowmounted reel, I run the line (15kg) off my rod (Shimano Taipan and TLD25) connected by a hefty snap swivel.

I have a couple of shallow bays in the harbour which the mud marlin frequent in summer. Procedure is to simply coil about 3 - 4m of line on the foredeck, then find some rays, head upwind and stow paddle. By the time I've got my act sorted with the bow at the ready I'm hopefully drifting back over the rays.
Trick in the yak is to fire "side-saddle" with the bow in a horizontal position (I should get a nice small compound, but love the simplicity of a barebow recurve although it tends to be a little cumbersome). Once your ray is pinned, stow the bow while the trusty TLD25 looks after the fish, then make yourself comfortable for a bit of a tussle 8)

I only use this method on those oily calm mornings, if there is any chop, then I head out with normal gear and drop a lump of bonito in front of them with the associated 8/0 attached.

Great eating, and my favorite sportfish.

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. If you are desperate for the old content of this particular post, it is available below base64 encoded and bzip2 compressed.

Red.

Welcome HLD,
I saw the mention of bowfishing there and got a blast from past memories, I haven't done it since leaving Queensland, I imagine it would be great fun from a Yak.

Do you Bowhunt for land locked species as well?

Strictly saltwater Blaen - Only freshwater fish I get around here are small muddy trout and eels. But then it's only an hour and a half to drive from East to West coasts where I am

Oh THOSE landlocked species.....

To make a short story even shorter - no. Nailed a few bunnies with the bow though, but never really took to hunting on terra firma.
