G'day everyone,
It's been a long long time since I last paddled my yak. I now have a feral thing called a Tinnie that I can now take out into the wide blue yonder. It's a Bluefin Weekender, 4.75m with a spinner on the back to push it along. Anyway, back to reality:
My yak is now 26 summers old and is is one of 5 that me and my mates built from a mould. The mould was made from my original yak that I made from a set of plans, it was called the "Whitewater". It was a fantastic yak and I used to paddle it out to a reef from Scarbourgh in Deception Bay (Brissie). I was working afternoon shift in those days and I went out to the reef at midnight. Gee, that was a long time ago. I spent most of my time after those days, fishing in Corio Bay north of Yeppoon. Yeppoon is the coastal town 35 klm northeast of Rockhampton. This was my favorite fishing spot, I used to fill the yak with big fish in those days. I want to use the yak again but time has caught up with me, I'm now pushing into year number 65. I would go back to Corio in a heart beat but now there are lots of crocs in the creeks and the Bay. What a pain this is.
My paddle is a 90 degree off-set style with a curved blade, its also very long. About 9 feet I think. It has an aircraft ally tube for the shaft and I didn't want to cut it back shorter. The mould was lost when I went to the US for 7 years otherwise I would make two more hulls and join them as a cat. Does anyone have the original plans for this yak? It is about 15 foot 6 inches in length and 30 inches in beam. I would love to get a copy of the plans if possible. The fiberglass yak is very fast and stable, Well, fast for its size, I can make it plane just with the paddle. It's also excellent in the sea and the waves even with its 6 foot open cockpit. There are so many crocs now in the local river and esturies that yak fishing in these places is far too dangerous, and no-one wants to remove the crocs to make it safe for small boats or yaker's. Well that's enough of my rambling on, it's great to find a super forum devoted to yaks.
