Hi yakkers

I know how these things works with the sound waves and that, but the one thing i do not know if how the info is presented on screen. ......what i want to know is this, If i am going forward is the image technically rolling forward with me, or is it popping up on the right hand side and rolling to the left as I move? hope it makes sence?????

good question.

the transducer throws out a 'cone' shaped beam with the tip of the cone at the transducer and the widest part of the cone at the bottom of the ocean.

There is a scale of how large the cone is per depth - I think it is 1/3 the depth, so for instance if you are in 30 feet of water the cone is scanning a 10 foot diameter on the floor of the ocean. (correct me if this is wrong)

basically ANYTHING that is within that cone will show on the sounder, and you are right, it does scroll from right to left across the screen.

eg..when you are paddling head on from deep water into shallow, it will scroll out across the screen and eventually show as a slope going up from left to right. If you paddle over a rock, it will scroll from right to left. etc etc.

therefore, the readout is not a 3D version of whats underneath, but a combination of detail from within the cone. if you come across a mid-water fish or bait school etc the sounder will show that fish/bait at the depth, but the fish could be anywhere within the cones circumference

make sense? :? :?

How accurate are the little fish images that represent a fish in the cone? For example will a piece of seaweed floating mid level below you show as a fish?

Also how well do they show drowned timber? Can you tell it's a tree or will it appear the same as weed?

From my limited understanding of sounders the detection of fish as arches or symbols has to do with the oxygen sacks that they use to hold their depth much like a diver uses weights only in reverse. The ability of the sounder to display these arches (fish symbols) depends on the power of the unit, the sensitivity setting and the resolution.

As for telling the difference between weed and a sunken tree this depends primarily on the resolution of the display and to a degree the the variation in color or shade of the display (256 color or in the black and white the more shades that can be displayed) as this allows you to determine a hard bottom from a sandy bottom and weed from sunken timber.

My knowledge is mostly theoretical as i am in the process of deciding on a sounder for my yak however i have also used several types on my dads and mates boats.

Hope this helps and is accurate information :?

I've only had limited experiance with finders, and have tried to get
my mind around how a stationairy/suspended object (fish/rock etc.) will scroll from right to left if it is still within the cone.
Its like all the fish are swimming in the same direction
at the same speed off the screen irregards if the boat is moving or stationairy.
What would the screen desplay if you were suspended above, say...
a sunken boat?

Think of it as the sounder taking a snapshot every few seconds and presenting that as a strip on the righthand side of the screen. The strip shows and objects within the cone and the average water depth within the cone.

Now the sounder does this every few seconds regardless of whether or not you are moving. Doesn't matter at all. If you move or objects, such as fish, move into or out of the cone, the strips will show variations. Otherwise the strip will not change. In this case the objects become extended across the screen to the left.

If you are stationary and a fish remains within the cone at the same depth, it will initally show as a spot on the right, maybe a bit of an arch, and will eventually become a horizontal stripe across the screen

I don't know whether this is essentially right or not.... but I at least like to kid myself, that the moment I see something fishy, and Im nearly always paddling, I start a countdown to the moment when I think the lure will be over the target that has been passed over. Just put my hat on back to front, operate stop watch with toe, and zer counting is in mock German. (alluding to Unterzeeboot)... Just kidding. Never had a hit though. When I catch a fish, it is always totally unexpected, and yes, when I slow for a drink. Must modify the crate, from rocket launchers to torpedo tubes 8)

Cheers all Andybear

Heya Alpha,

Once you get your head around how the information is dislayed you will wonder why you didnt buy one earlier.

For eg, with Bass, your sounder would help you locate a school of bass, but also tell you what mood they are in, are they inactive and just suspending in the water column, or are they active and on the move. I have found inactive schools of bass which display as your typical 'arches' on the sounder, other times an active school is located, and the bass are 'streaking' all over the screen, moving up and down through the water column and leaving zig zagged diagonal lines across the screen.

On our first forum gathering at Hinze a small school of active Bass was found by Chris and I in about 5m of water, switched to a Rapala Ice Jig and dropped it over the side of the stationary yak, jigged a bit and within a few mins we landed a nice little Bass :)

I'd be lost without mine, especially with the types of fishing I do.
