Scupper and I had an early morning trip to the mouth of the River Murray on saturday. The aim was to launch from Hindmarsh Island, paddle to the far side of the mouth, and then wade the surf casting lures in the hope of catching a large mulloway. Unfortunately there is almost zero flow out of the mouth, and as a consequence I think the fish are offshore at present. There were several others there with the same idea - tinnies, canoes, kayaks, and for the brief period of time that we there nil fish were taken. November is normally a good month for big fish at the mouth, but by all accounts there was a run of small fish a fortnight or so ago and not much since. We decided to troll / drift inside the mouth and picked up several smallish salmon trout (as many as we wanted really) before the wind picked up strongly and we headed back. Theres still a lot of engineering works happening at the mouth to try and keep it open :(

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. Fisher, I enjoyed the story and the pics. The yellow yak in the pic, is that a Prowler 15? Nice lines.

Fisher, how do you prepare small Aussie salmon like that. We have thousands of them available at that size down here. I generally only use a few for gummy baits and never worry about anymore due to the bones ect.

Catch ya Scott

I love the salmon at that size, best eating size for them IMO
Heaps of salmon trout around that size around inshore waters around here but the minimum size for salmon in WA is 30cm. What's the minimum size in your area? I take home quite a few (well, last year I did harder to find legal size ones this year) at the 30 - 35cm size and either smoke 'em or just scale, head and gut 'em & fry in pan with some vegies or just coated with flour/lemon pepper mix. MMmmmm, now I'm salivating....

In NSW there is no minimum but the bag limit is 5. With the current bumper season, due to the ban on commercial harvest among other things, there isn't any need to be taking fish smaller than 50cm, except for bait. That's if you can stay on your yak of course

Scott - when fresh they are very nice just butterfly filleted and cooked in butter. We actually prefer to smoke them in one of those small commercially available smokers (scupper is expert in this). Any larger than this and I find the flesh a bit dry. They are easy to fillet the bones out. They are also excellent bait due to their blood content.

Troppo - yep, thats the Prowler 15. I really like it but often wonder if I should have gone the P13 instead. From all accounts they are a fast yak to paddle, but I've got to admit I struggle when the wind gets up to the 15-20 knot mark and beyond (like they were on the weekend).

Gee it sure is sad to see that mighty river so degraded. I would love to see it get a good flushing
Agree with you there Occy. If they weren't dredging it would have been closed completely by now - very sad.

The size limit here in SA is 21cm. Most of those fish were 25 - 30cm. There is a bag limit on small fish (20 per person for under 35cm) and another for larger fish (10 per person over 35cm)

Minimum legal for salmon in Victoria is only 21cm. Small fish from 25 -40cm, filleted, de-boned and skinned, light coating of flour and shallow fried, are one of my favorite eating fish. Any bigger than that I find the flesh too coarse for this method, and just smoke the fillets.
