In driving, Mr Joe Average takes about a second to react to a threat on the road. Thats why they tell you to follow at a minimum distance of two seconds behind the preceding car. So you've got a second to react, and a one second buffer to stop, without hitting him (providing he doesn't hit something and stop sooner
).
In the wide world of adventure sports, reaction times of less than .05 of a second are rare (say, Formula 1 drivers). This guy may be faster still...
