Hi all

Just some pics of my rig.

Its a 15' 6" Noe (not a Yak) with outriggers and powered by a Minn Kota.

There is some video of it on the Brunswick River at:
http://www.johnluck.net/index_canoe.htm

Just click the link that says,"Click Here to see the movie."

Anyone else using a Canoe rather than a Kayak?

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Welcome Ferrett, I don't know much about canoes, and even less about outriggers but that sure is a very nice looking rig you have there. Did you fit it out yourself? Keep us informed on how she performs mate.
Hi Paul

I bought the canoe on eBay ($650) Got the outriggers from Ballina Recreation Mart ($300). And then bought the Minn Kota from Tweed Coast Marine ($255).

It performs like a dream. I've never put her on the Brunswick river yet without coming home without a feed.

The battery (100ah deep cycle marine) will last over 3 hrs at full speed (the motor draws 30amps at max speed).

Nice beast John - I particularly like the overhead garage setup, and the quick-release outrigger. [edit: and the croc recipe on your web page].

There are a couple of other canoes on the forum - yours looks like a great platform to take the family out on.

Hi Red

Had some trouble at first getting it up on the garage roof but got it sorted. The problem was the only points to attach the lifting gear was below the center of gravity so that when it was lifted, it tried to flip over. Strapping it to the pole got the lifting points above the C ot G, problem solved. Now I just lower it onto the car, tie it down and go and lift it off when I get home. (and i got 15 feet of garage back) :D

The outriggers are great. Very stable. The quick release set up works great.

Try the 'croc' recipe if you can get croc meat. The local butcher sells it here. The recipy is also good with other meats.

Hi mac_fish

There are good fish in the Brunswick. All you have to do is work out how to seperate them from the water. The Bruns has nice bream, flathead, whiting, and some HUGE mangrove jacks. The jacks are real heart and line breakers.

I often sit and watch other boats on the Bruns. They often wonder why they don't catch anything. One of the reasons is they charge up, stop, throw out the anchor, and then throw out the line and leave it laying there. Its not the way to go.

You need to drift and present your bait / lure to as many fish as possible. Its also best to be as quite as possible, as the bream are a little shy, and you need to fish as light as possible (although, light can be a problem when you hook up a big jack)

You are right. I am lucky to have the Brunswick on my doorstep

John a brilliant setup mate and welcome, and hope to see it one day.

By coincidence had planned a trip to BH this weekend with my family and 3 yaks with the intention of heading up river towards Mullumbimby; but we have reneged in light of the weather forecast

There is another canoe member [name is forgotten at present] working the river near Surfers Paradise

Will PM when heading your way again

Hi RICHO

Well it looks like the Weather Bureau got it right this time. I'll be staying off the river this weekend myself. The forecast isn't good till Tuesday.

I've lived in the area for over 20 years and have never gone all the way up the Bruns to Mullumbimby. How long does it take to paddle? And how shallow does it get? Asking because I was wondering if the trip is within my battery range. (its a very big canoe for one person to paddle a long way and I'm not as spry as i used to be :( )

Do you use your yaks for fishing as well as touring / sightseeing? Lately I've been shooting video on the Bruns river to put together a short doco of the river and the wildlife.

Yes, let me know when you are coming to BH

John, steady rain here as I'm typing so made the correct decision in postponing.

I have never fished the river at all mate, just off the walls at the entrance.

So no answers for you on the river at all, and my plan had been just to explore towards Mullumbimby with a lure trolling behind just in case; I have been told there are shallows and some narrow runs, but don't know for sure if the info is correct

Enjoyed the video at your link and certainly looks a nice paddle location, I will only go where tide can assist in the trip, as my stamina is not as good as your battery at a guess.

With questionable battery time maybe you could drift/paddle up with a tide, and motor back for the return.

Will stay in touch mate

Very nice. Canoes are great for smooth water, especially camping because they can carry such collossal weight. Not my personal preference, but great stuff all the same.

Can you drop me a PM with details of your canoe, manufacturer etc. Looks sweet.

Hi Phoenix

Yes, it suits me. I like the smooth water.

I've no idea who made the canoe. There are no brands or anything on the canoe. Bought it (canoe only, no outriggers or motor) on eBay for $650. A bargain I thought.

You may want to have a look at the website again. http://www.johnluck.net/index_canoe.html
I've just made a new canoe / kayak trolly for $30 Should work a treat.

John had a look at your trolley and it looks good, I already have a trolley cut down but am going for a scupper connection to suit the yaks I have
