Hey gang
New member here.
Just an idea for a kayak sail - its really just for getting home downwind works well but i'm going to try again with a larger surface area
Hit the hardware store and picked up
*clear plastic (2x1m)
*2x1.8m broom handles
*packet o small tacks
*gaffa tape (if you cant make it with gaffa tape...)
*2x3m cord
= <$20
Basically attached the clear plastic (in a trapezoid configuration as shown) to the broom handles, leaving some room on the bottom of each pole. - gaffa taped all connections and later reinforced with tacks.
The two broom handle ends just sit in the scupper holes at your feet.
Attach the cords in front and behind the sail to ... anything
You can use your feet to keep the poles apart, but in my experience they tend to behave themselves.
pros
no drilling/permanent alterations to the kayak
i made mine without tools - (brick= hammer for the tacks - if you don't have bricks lying around - lets face it you are a chump/ghey)
collapses/rolls into two poles wrapped in plastic - I shove this under the two straps for my front hatch
light, f'n cheap
no boom - and therefore no BOOM!
can erect on the water - if you tie the front off, you can erect it and tie the back sitting down.
really low stress on the kayak
hands free once up! = fish/paddle
cons
loose the ~5 most important degrees of vision at the front of your kayak.
too small a surface area - let me try a bigger model and get back!
loose access to any front hatch you may have while the sail is up.
