Thought I would put up a post to see how many of us are affected by this drought.

The effects of the drought seem to be widespread even here amongst the members here on the board.

I haven't used a sprinkler at home for at least a year now and doubt if I will ever use one again the way things are going. It's amazing how well the washing machine water goes on the garden.

I have owned a boat for five years and have never been able to use it in my local dam when it's been full.

Except The Gold Coast yakers,is there anywhere in Australia where yakers can go and fish in their local dam and expect to be able to fish it at it's full capacity?

For example, places like Tassy and Perth are you guys going through similar weather patterns?

Cheers

G'day mate.

Good post.

Lenthall's dam up here on the Fraser Coast is only about a metre below the spillway so there is still plenty of water in it.

I think the problem is more than the drought. Particularly so in SE Qld.

The property boom has created unprecedented drain on our water supply, much more than our systems can cope with - even without the drought. We simply don't get enough rain to support the projected population of the area.

That is why Beattie wants to steal the water from our Mary River - to feed the all consuming appetite of the developers in the Greater Brisbane Area.

Hey, here's an idea - Let's build a bunch of big fat nuclear reactors right here in Australia. We'll mine uranium, sell uranium, use uranium and earn huge amounts of revenue to dump the worldwide stockpile of used radioactive isotopes because we will be another uranium using country.

We have such a fantastic history of destroying our own infrastructure and letting all things Australian go to seed.

These reactors will eventually explode due to neglect and emit more greenhouse gasses which will create even more and severe droughts.

We are a banana republic. We are good at building new things but simply cannnot afford to maintain them no matter what lies the politicians tell us.

If these bastards are so committed to the drought, why the hell don't they invest in desalination plants and green energy. MONEY and GREED, that's why!

Desalination requires huge amounts of energy. That's why they're talking about locating nuclear plants close to urban centres. Their economic models include colocated desalination (after all both coal and nuclear plants are just sophisticated steam turbines) and the cost of transporting water is high. I haven't heard of green desalination yet.

The big issue is that we keep trying to solve these problems with large-scale solutions. We should be trying to make each societal unit, be it a dwelling or a block of flats or a business building more self-contained. Collect as much rainwater as possible, recycle as much water as possible on-site, generate as much energy as possible on-site. Of course no water or energy authority is going to put themself out of business by sanctioning and promoting such an approach.

After that we can take on the mind-numbing stupidity of growing cotton and rice in inland Australia.

Very true Peril!

Sorry for pinching your post Mac_fish.

With all the nuclear knowledge in 2007, (not forgetting Chernobyl, Hiroshima and Nagasaki), this is not a clean or viable energy option. It's also expensive. No doubt large American companies are already brokering nice discounts and will take all the nessecary construction shortcuts to ensure the bloody thing blows up in 10, 20 or 30 years.

For decades, towns, suburbs and villlages all across Australia proudly displayed the banner, e.g. "Blah blah town is a nuclear free zone".

These words were worn like a badge of honor and was a credit to Australians for demonstrating morality and ethics at a time when true democracy still existed. Large areas in Australia experienced residential growth because they refused to be part of a nuclear transport corridor.

It also meant that us Aussies weren't cornered into storing global nuclear waste product as part of an export contract.

I think we need to remember why this nation traditionally opposed nuclear energy. It's wrong on so many levels.

truly it is heart-breaking. I grew up in the wimmera region of Victoria and we spent our years growing up on the water fishing swimming boating etc. There are now a generation of kids as old as 10 that have never known water in some of the lakes. They are now overgrown paddocks and its so depressing to see. some of these lakes will never fill again.
It really is a critical time ... But is it too late???
