Took the yak out at Culburra again on Saturday with the intention of sitting behind the breakers chasing a few bream with the brother on light gear.

The weather Gods again smiled on us & conditions were near perfect. The bream fishing was particularly quiet so looking for some action we saw a few birds working further out & decided to investigate. This was the furthest I have ever been out in the yak, but the conditions were flat as (as you can see from the photo).

There was heaps of white bait around so I tried a few SP & my brother tried some striped tuna. I caught a little yakka, which we thought was a good sign with possible some bigger fish below them.

Not long after my brother hooked up on a nice snapper only to lose him at the boat, we then got some really good runs on some decent fish (most probably snapper because you could feel the big head thumps through the rod), only problem was we were rigged for bream fishing with 2kg line & had no trace, the fish were just stripping 15yds of line & then busting us off. We kept drifting back over the spot & had a lot of fun. The bait (tuna) definitely out fished the SP’s on this occasion.

We ended up catching pike, salmon, snapper & the obligatory Sgnt Baker. Pictured is the only snapper which we managed to land (which went back)

Cheers

Nice work Jeffo. Congrats on venturing out further than you have gone before. Nothing like going that bit further to keep the adrenaline moving. That's one of the things I love about yakking, there is always a boundary somewhere to push on.

You had only 2 kg line? I have lost so many fish on 2 kg, and lures, that I am currently using 6 & 8 kg stuff. Heavy I know, but maybe when my technique is better I will go lighter. I usually take two rods and a spare reel with different strength line. What are your thoughts on taking other strength line?

Troppo,

Definately keen to try something a bit heavier, think 4-6kg with a decent trace. I'm all for catch & release but i'm keen to get to the catch part first.

Cheers
