Hi guys , i am after some info on the best method of retreival of the sx40, i plan to do some drifting tomorrow [weather permitting]along the pontoons on the woronora river, do you use a straight retreive, or wind then stop and let the lure float up and wind again type of retreival, :? :? , what is the best way to get the best out of these lures apart from trolling

They usually come with some suggestions for retrieves. A straight, slow retrieve will work. A lift and pause retrieve will work. A jerk or two then wind in the slack. Any combination of the above. Sometimes ripping them past fish will get a territorial strike. Mix it up until something starts working

Yep, all of the above works for me too.

Also, if you want to work the bottom, tie the SX on the end of a Carolina rig and use the same methods mentioned. works a treat in deeper water for flathead.

all a Carolina rig is a swivel and sinker ahead of a trace about 50cm long. the sinker will take the lure down and the lure will work just above the bottem. Real slow, intermittent retrieve.

Hairy, love your new signature , i will certainly drink to that, do you use the carolina rig on the micro mullets , or do you cast as above or troll?

g'day barry,

Haven't tried it with the mullet yet. I mainly just troll. with 6 pound fireline they will go down over 10 feet which is ideal for the shallow river here.

Re the signature thank you I like it too. :D

I have had success with the Sprogs, though I was not using a sx40 at the time to compare whether the Sprogs were doing better or worse. I just found the Sprogs needed more 'tuning' than the sx40s I have had, to make them troll properly. I successfully used a version of the rig mentioned above where a swivel and sinker were used to get the lure down deeper. I just used a swivel and no sinker and found it added just enough weight for my Sprog to work really well with being dragged around behind my yak.
