Gday guys
Heading up Patoonga creek tomorrow and have been reliably informed that the bream (1-2kg) and flathead(up to 6kg) up thier are huge. But unfortunalty so are the bull sharks.

The way i was told was not if i ran into one but when.

Just wondering what precautions you all take to fend off the grey bitey things.

I was planning on using only lure or sp's and I kill fish i am keeping straight away and let the rest go. Don't have the funds for a shark shield or powerhead at the minute. Anybody know of anything else to help ward them off. Magic voodoo potion or something :D

Cheers Dave

Keep moving.

We get them in the Noosa Sound, Woods Bays area but they only seem to be a problem if you've been working the same spot for too long and pulled one too many fish from the one localised area.

All the activity eventually piques their interest.

A friend of mine who was studying at Bond Uni here on the Gold Coast told me of how one of his professors kayaks to work from his home on the waterfront every morning.

Early one morning on the paddle to work he was harassed by a large bull shark in the canals. He ended up having to beach the kayak and wait a short while before going back on his way.

Just cruising, Billybobs got the right idea as far as I am concerned. Play a fish out before bringing it to the yak so that the fight time at the side of the yak is minimised. That way if a whaler grabs one of your hooked fish it is not doing it at the side of the yak. Use lures, keep on moving you shouldn't attract the interest of one. The other thing is to put any fish kept somewhere like in a sealed tub or your front hatch ect where they will not leak blood into the water. Also avoid letting them thump around on your deck as this sound will bring a shark in for a look.

Thanks guys

I think the keep moving idea sounds good, Thier are a lot of shallows up thier to so i think i'll stick in close. (thats were the bream are anyway)

When i get some confidence up , might go after a sharky on day just to cure the nerves

hi i have had a few run in's with bull shark's in the pine river. if you know they are very close to you try a hard slap on the water with the paddle it has worked very good with me in the past as the noise will scare them off. but i have been told not to do that just drift. if they come with in paddle reach slap them.

good luck, thats just 1 of those things we have 2 deal with in our sport.
