Mushi and I met at the ramp near the Cerberus wreck about 6:30pm, hoping for a snapper or two from the extensive shallow reef areas in this part of Port Philip. The plan was to use artificials early, then anchor up and fish with bait when it got dark. We started off working 4" minnows in 4-6m and picking up a few small pinkies. I caught a 29cm silver trevally, my first on an SP, and a suprise catch considering the size of the plastic and the 2/0 jighead I was using  We were getting a lot of hits that didn't connect, tiny pinkies being the likely culprits. I almost had a pike jump in the yak after following a retrieved SP right to the surface then jumping out of the water after it. Trolling my lucky blue/silver Bomber Long A produced a further small pinkie.
We anchored up at around 8:30pm and commenced burleying. I had a fair selection of fresh baits I'd collected the night before, garfish of various sizes and 4 small sand crabs, as well as frozen squid and bluebait However, despite doing everything right, trying MANY different baits, and despite near perfect conditions (slightly murky, quite lumpy, little moon), the snapper didn't come to play
We picked up a few more goldfish-sized pinkies on the bait, Dave hooked a suspected banjo shark (fiddler ray) which spat the hook near the yak. He also caught some trophy-sized starfish on pilchards
We called it quits at about 10:30, I am happy to admit I was feeling a little queasy by this stage, with good sized swells rolling through the whole time we were on the water.
Despite the lack of fish it was a top trip, great to talk all things fishing with Mushi and enjoy the company of someone who loves fishing as much as me
We have to do it again soon mate
