Heya Ben,

Eagle make some entry level sounders which are worth a look as well.

A-Mart sometimes have good deals on Eagle sounders during their sales.

G'day Ben

I actually just picked up that Humminbird sounder, easy to fit and install, however yet to actually get on the water with it. I got mine from Big W for $168 as I think normal retail is a bit higher, ebay has them too. The Eagle Cuda is another option, although I havent checked it out, I figure it would have the same features, I got the humminbird casue it happend to be on sale the same week my yak got delivered.

I recommend the Navman 4430 with in-hull transducer. Some people have success regular transom mount transducers stuck inside the hull but the special in-hull transducer has a physically bigger element that gives good resolution even when working through the hull material. It has a large surface area for good adhesion.
If you are only running a sounder, don't be persuaded to buy a big heavy battery. A 3.3 AH sealed lead acid battery runs a sounder way longer than you can sit in a kayak!
Investigate the wiring plug situation before you decide on your model. I have installed some sounders with monstrous transducer plugs that require hideous access holes.
