I just bought myself a new (2nd hand) BMW motorcycle and have been authorized to take a 3- 4 day solo-adventure. Sadly, I won't be able to fit the yak to the bike (Im considering building a custom trailer for it though) but I will be using the trip for some recon on top paddling/fishing spots.

That said, I'm interested to hear if anyone has any opinions on where I should check out. Most of my land based fishing is done at the prom but when I say done, I mean done to death. Its time to try somewhere new. Anyone got any suggestions (absolutely anywhere in Vic)?

"Go west young man...."

Most of my productive LB fishing has been at various spots along the great ocean road, mostly between Lorne and Apollo Bay. No real specific hotspots, but there are SO many ledges, rocks and cliffs that face onto deep water that you're a chance for anything - KG whiting, trevally and snapper, as well as the usual reef species - leatherjackets, sweep, wrasse etc. If you follow the ocean road far enough you'll hit Portland - I've never fished it, but I hear some amazing things about the Lee Breakwater.

Aside from the great fishing, it's a brilliant drive with great scenery  Just be careful not to become a statistic - Dad told us about a time (many years ago) when he and a mate were rock fishing, saw a motorbike go off the edge at a high point on the road, and ended up helping to carry the body back up to the road - in about a half a dozen bags and baskets

Squidder, thats kinda what I was thinking, but I have done a tour out that way before (went all the way to SA border). I didn't get a whole lot of chances to fish last time though, so I'm thinking of doing it again. I do know what you mean about the great ocean road to. Fortunately I'm a fairly cautious rider (these days) and tend to play it pretty safe on imfamous roads.

Red, got me a '95 F650, which is to replace a kawasaki klr 650 that some stemhead stole from me about 6 months ago. The BMW is similar, but better in every regard. I was thinking of a road bike only, but decided that I do too many off-road trips when I go chasing trout. The f650 is a better road rider than off road, however. It's an awesome ride. Now I just gotta figure out how to build a trailer to attach to it so I can use it to tow my hobie sport around.

ANyone here ever heard of a yak being towed behhind a motorbike? I'm not sure if it can be done, but I'll try anything once. :)

Hmm go west young man!!!
Artillery Rocks about 20km past Lorne is good all year round, fish at the point "watch out for waves".
Johanna beach for excellent surf fishing "get there early for a good spot"
Blanket bay just west of Apollo bay is a nice protected area for the yak and rock fishing if the wind is blowing in the right direction.

On the other side cemetary beach Kilcunda and the punch bowl are good options if not a little tiring on the way back. Baxters beach is also meant to be a procuctive area as well as Loch Sport and Golden beach.

Was down there boat based on the weekend, had a chat to one of the pro reporters there and they just haven't shown up at all this year. Worst season ever, we tried trolling up and down Wild dog just behind the breakers without a touch. We managed a good gummy, leather jackets, flatties and some other reef fish and were bitten of numerous time by big toothy critters.

But your right when they are there the fishing is hot, I often fish just in front of the museum or far left at Wild Dog.

Milt, I've heard that about the MIA salmon out that way but I'm not so fussed by that because I'm overdosed on ***** anyway right now. I'm thinking I'll head towards Nelson and try for some of those Glenelg river Jews.

Red, thanks for the link. I've found some interesting modular trailers that look as if they are both very light and easily customized. I think I might have a talk to these guys:

Nice going on the wheels 5th...congrats. I reckon ya got a good plan sorted. Just prior to Lorne there's also Jump Rock which can produce at times. A lot of those streams and rivers also hold little browns and sometimes odd surprises. I think the Erskine at Lorne (which is small and heavily fished) holds a Vic or Aussie record for EP. If ya came back inland with a Mulloway tail waving outta ya bag you could also try Bullen Merri or Purrumbete before winging it home. What a tour :D

yeah Poddy, I can't wait. Its going to kill me being at some of these places without a yak, but hey, you can't always have everything. I'm thinking I will head west and will throw a line in most suggestions put forward here. Thanks for your contributuion to the list. Hopefully I'll return with some awesome photos to show :)

Hey 5th, good choice. I have owned nearly 20 BMW motorcycles and nearly bought an F650GS in June, just missed it & ended up buying a new KLR 650. I've towed a couple of trailers behind bikes and am slowly designing a trailer so I can tow a yak behind the bike. Haven't got much of a shed/workshop currently & when that changes that's a project that's planned.

My plan is for a trailer with an extendable drawbar for when it's carrying the yak & able to be brought back to normal length for regular use. Ideally I'd like another shorter yak to be used for this, 4 metre trailer behind 2 metre bike is the worry.

I've got a few telescopic rods that I've carried all over Aust on bikes & I've found them reasonably good for fishing with. Like a lot of stuff we carry on bikes, it's all about compromise.
