Hi Folks,

The 12 year old Shimano Calcutta 100 is starting to feel a liitle rough around the edges.
Thought bearing replacments may be in order (hate to think how many revolutions they have done)(and I am not about to work it out)!
Still have the box, all the diagrams and have pulled it apart for cleaning etc many times.
However -
Has anyone used any aftermarket bearings?

Am considering ordering some ceramic and stainless ones from http://www.bocabearings.com http://www.bocabearings.com/main1.aspx? ... BK103C-YZZ

Has anyone used ceramic bearings before? Did it make a difference?

Also need to replace a bearing in my much newer Daiwa TDA150 - Not happy with how quickly it deteriorated.

Hi Poly..

I've recently bought parts for my 30-year old ABU 10000C from Reel Doctor in Canada http://www.reeldr.com/. Service was great and I notice they also list Shimano parts, but not Daiwa. Might be worth a try.

Mate the ceramic bearings are brilliant. I have tuned quite a few 1500C abus ect with them when I used to do this back on the mainland for bass fishos and they make a huge difference, especially with the right lube.

With a couple of my personal 1500Cs, I can cast the lightest bream HBs no worries with their lightweight spools with I got imported from Japan Tackle and the ceramic bearings I got from the USA. When tuned with a superthin lube I have no issues casting 1.5 to 2 gm HBs with them when used in conjunction with a high modulas graphite rod built on a blank such as a Loomis IMX SJ6400.

Cheers Scott,

Do you have a contact / website for where you got the ceramics from?
For the lube are we talkin' rocket fuel here?

Seems like it will cost less to get from the states then getting genuine replacments here anyway.

Mate as far as lube goes, I use to use one which I sourced from a dentist supply company and was used in their high speed tools. We nick named it "ant's piss oil" due to it being thinner than ants piss and it was far thinner than the rocket lube but needed replacing every 4 or 5 trips. I would soak the bearings and levelwind (assuming a levelwind that tracks in freespool like a small abu) in acetone to dissolve all old lubricants and re-lube very sparingly. (around 2-3 drops per bearing and two drops on the levelwind which was painted on with a small high quality horsehair artist brush). The company where I used to get them has since closed down but if you do a google search on ceramic bearings you will find a few suppliers in the US and the UK which cater to the tournament casting guys.

I used to get my lightweight spools from http://japantackle.com. They also do ceramic bearings and possibly lightweight spools for shimanos. I have gotten Calutta 50 spools off them before that weigh around the 7gm mark compared to the around 17gm factory spool. Go to their website and have a look under tuning parts and see what they have to suit your model.
