G'day all -wondering if anyone uses or recommends to use/not to use armor all on their kayak. Tina (heroutdoors) bought a second-hand sea-kayak that has some scuffing and has faded in places where it has been left out in the sun for too long .
It only mentions not to use on clear plastic.

I have used armour-all . . . occasionally. It certainly makes ya yak come up looking new. I think I should use it more often but, I have to do a high lift up onto my car racks and when the yak is a bit slippery from the armour-all . . . . Also, by the time I am on the water, I have a bit still on my hands and the paddle is a bit slippery.

Mate, the yanks spray their poly yaks with a product I think is called aerospace something maybe aerospace 101. It is a UV protectant that works on ploy yaks. I am yet to source any in Australia despite doing the rounds of all of the marine dealers a year or so ago.

Armour All works well. Adds a bit of sparkle to a tired yak and has a UV protector in it to dampen the harsh effects of the Aussie sun.
Don't get too carried away in the cockpit area though, as you may end up sliding overboard!

Hi all,

A word of warning, Armourall might not be a good long term option for your yak - or anything plastic for that matter. Check out this thread. The claim is that the silicon oil in Armourall leaches the "plasticizers" out of the plastic, and once you start using it you cannot stop!

I don't know if the thread is just a rant, but it does strike a chord with me. I used to use armourall religiously on the dash of my old Merc but noticed the vinyl was getting brittle. Then again, it was a 1964 model and maybe 40 years out of a dash is about all you can expect. I used to use the stuff on my motorbike seats also. Sure it was slippery, but riding a bike is all about the thrills :)

In any event, I stopped using the armourall and got myself some 303 Aerospace Protectant. I found it at AutoBArn, but had to fork out close to $40 for a litre. It is nifty stuff - I have also found it to be brilliant for cleaning and slicking up fly lines.

Sometime soon I'll post about the new love of my life. I picked up my hobie Revolution last week and am over the moon with it :)

Cheers.

Agree there John!
What are you riding at the moment?

Hi Red

Not 'riding' now. I've had a few but haven't had one for a few years now. The one I was referring to was a Suzuki 500 two-stroke. Fantastic acceleration those two-strokes.

Suzuki 500
Ahh yes - Suzuki made some great two-strokes. The 500, though prone to disappearing over the horizon in a big cloud of smoke after a few years, still disappeared damn fast!

Nice bike.

The RG500 square 4 was a cracker. Almost bought one once...
Now saving for a Ducati Sport 1000S. This one will be a little trickier to get by the finance minister than a new kayak!
