Hi All
My wife and I decided to go for a trip up to a place called Miara (it's near 1770) for a week. I'd never heard of the place but one of the guys I work with passed through it recently and said it would be a top spot to do some yak fishing.
We left Southport at about 11am on last Monday morning and it was getting pretty late in the afternoon when we got to Bundaburg, we didn't really know where this place was, so we called into the tourist info centre and it was too far to make it by dark, so instead we were told that Elliot Heads was a nice spot, so we headed for there.
Indeed it's a beautiful spot, but the wind nearly blew us over, we just spent the night there and next morning headed off to find the Township of Miara.
Typically the wind dropped as we were leaving :?
After an hour or so we entered the Township of Miara, which is actually a caravan park. The guy was right it's a top spot, we setup our tent and dropped the kayaks in.
We just cruised around to get the lay of the place that afternoon, but it looked good.
Next morning I took off on the outgoing tide trolling an SX48, not much happened for about 30 minutes or so, then I hooked up on a Queenfish, undersized but at least there were fish there. I kept trolling down to the river mouth, where I'd fish until the tide turned and come back, the fishfinder showed clouds of fish, but nothing was biting. I then tried drifting around the mouth jigging some sft plastics (pink squidgy shad, berkley sandworm, berkley shrimp and a couple of gulp minnows) still nothing and after a couple of hours the tide hadn't changed and I had nothing in the bag.
I decided I'd paddle back against the tide and wind.
Still trolling the SX48 I went over a deep hole around 6metres deep and hooked a Trevally again too small, I continued over the shllow banks suddenly hooking onto a good flathead around 60cm, got him to the yak and dropped him into the water as I was putting him into the bag (Goodness me I said!!) continuing on not anther 30 mtrs another flattie not legal, then a good Bream. Finally got back!
Next day though I did manage to get another flattie around 60cm.
Interesting though I got no hits on any of the soft plastics I tried.
But I'll be back
