I know the feeling of the ink. I went for my first actual kayak squid fishing trip the other day and got a few. Managed to get them to ink into the net in the water, but because I didn't kill them straight away they leaked ink all over the nice yellow prowler I have :lol: . Don't think I will bother cleaning it until after winter, cause I plan to do a lot more sessions yet.

Just wish our Northern Calamari got as big as your Southern ones. A good one here is 1kg and they pull drag, would love to see what a 2-3kg model would do.

But a query re the herring, [and note I have only tangled with 2" ones for bait], would a herring of that size on your mat have much of a fillet on it mate?

Herring, AKA Tommy Ruff, are pretty fat and tasty and worth keeping over 20 cm, and that one's almost 30. I've only ever seen them that size at Kangaroo Island.
