By coincidance I was watching Fishing WA yesterday and they were catching herring on a wide gape hook with about 3" of green plastic tube on the line and no bait, about 4' above the hook was a berley float thingo stuffed with bran etc, just cast and after a pause just retrieved and the fish struck...they looked like they would make a great live bait as well
