Went out for the second time ever on the yak. Ventured from mentone life saving club to table rock, zilch on the troll to and from, and zilch on the soft plastics. but still very fun.
Wheres my best chance on getting on to a few pinkies? i got out to table rock, went about 100-200 m from marine park and started chucking 3 inch power minnows in punkinseed, didnt get one touch. Was it just bad luck or am i fishing the wrong spot? Also what depth should i troll my lures at, i was using one that was diving 1-2m i think, should i invest in some HX-40's?
Help would be great!

Hi FFM,

I reckon the conditions were not conducive for Pinkies at Ricketts over the weekend. I didn't even get one touch on Saturday morning. I fished from the top end of the marine park down to table rock. Whilst table rock used to be a favourite spot I haven't landed one fish there in over 4 months. Most Mangoes start fishing at the teahouse at the moment.

There is nothing wrong with the Berkley Minnow in Pumkinseed. I have caught the majority of my Pinkies on them.

As for HB's you need a lure that goes around 3m to have a shot at the Pinkies. The Black/Silver & Blue/Silver colors have worked for me in 4" deep diving minnow style. Best you hook up with Poddy for a session. Only then will you realise how slow you need to troll for Pinkies. You can troll faster for Snook & Pike.

The tides are looking better next weekend and I will probably head several klm south of table rock in search of some bigger fish.

Regards
Grant

FFM,

I wouldn't be discouraged. I wouldn't be expecting results every trip. As Grant says if you hook up with some of the guys who do well you will pick up some good hints.

Grant,

How did Poddy and myself miss you on Saturday morn? We came back in from wide around 9am then hung around close in probabably for 1/2 hour. I too will be giving it another shot wide and early next weekend. See if our plans coincide.

FFM, I echo what the other guys have said, it was bloody hard to land a fish on the weekend (it has been hit and miss the last few trips off ricketts), and you should definately try and hook up with the mangoes for a trip or two, even if you don't get a fish you'll at least know what techniques will work, and whether you're doing the right thing. Sounds like you weren't doing much wrong on your last trip though, with the SPs you need to be fishing on or very close to the bottom for best results on the pinkies

Hiya FFM, If ya having fun your doing everything right. For the pinkies about there 3-4m seems about right for depth, and watching ya rod tip vibrate to match paddling speed to lure also helps. How much line out the back did ya let out? Stick at em, some days are blanks no matter what ya try  :D

I was going to give you all my fish-catching wisdom, then I got to thinking. . . .

I don't catch much.

The guy seriously wants to catch some fish.

My advice would probably catch him even less fish, if that were possible.

The other guys are experts who catch fish and give good advice.

Best for me to shut up.

Okay, that's what I'll do then. Bye.
