Hi All.

As most of you know we've been running the fishing comp for a few months now. I know this doesn't appeal to everyone, but the aim is to make it as attractive as possible so that as many kayak fishos as possible get out there each month with the idea of having fun and trying to catch that biggun whilst trying to out-do their mates!

So, I'll throw the floor open to everyone/anyone who wants to have their say on how they would like to see it run in 2007.

Is the current format OK? If not what would you like to see changed/altered?

Would prizes make you more interested in participating, or does that not matter to you?

If prizes were to be offered, how would you feel about paying a monthly/quarterly/yearly entry fee? If so, how much would you be prepared to pay?

Is the time frame (one week) suitable? If not - what timeframe would you prefer? [Note - this one was hotly contested last time!]

Any other comments/suggestions/complaints? Get them off your chest here! All responses will be heard and considered!

Hi Davey

Happy to provide some feedback, I am keen to get on the scoreboard for 07......The only issue I have with the old format is it's only for a week, the Nov and Dec comp's were no good for me, not just lack of fish but the nominated week was impossible for me to get out.....any chance of a two week period?

Also, one entry per person? not sure if that's happening now or not?

Prizes! yeah, I like the subscription method, even $10 a head would be sure to generate a decent hamper of fishing goodies for the winner at the end of the year.

(Maybe the trophy could be the downrigger bomb Leigh caught from Jindy)

Like the whole thing - just seem to struggle to organise the weather to match ane seem to 25knot plus weekends when its on.

In the state vs state thing your could limit the points scoring fish for each month to 3 fish to count for the state - thus it doesn't become which state has more fisho's in. It helps stop the weather being crap in one area and the other region cleaning up and bascially making the comp out of reach for states.

Also having an annual (running total) of largest of each species would be great to see as well.
regards

Unfortunately, due to the change in ownership of this web site and the lack of response by the owners to my requests to remove my email address from all administrative-level notifications and functionality, I have decided to remove my posts on AKFF. Thank you for the great times, the fantastic learning experiences and the many many fish. If you are desperate for the old content of this particular post, it is available below base64 encoded and bzip2 compressed.

Yes, excellent job through 2006 Dave.
I think the current format is pretty good, although maybe it could be extended to somehow include 2 weekends (perhaps the first 2 week-ends of each month - maybe to run from the first saturday to the second sunday of each month - which makes it an 8 day comp compared to the current 7 day comp) - that way, it allows everyone to have 2 full weekends to get out amongst it. I'm not fussed at all about prizes - I doubt that would be a greater incentive for me to head out.
cheers

Good thinking Dave, now's a good time to take stock.

I would like to keep it fun and believe that offering prizes is just asking for a lot of extra administration, grievances, "discussion", etc.

One thought is that there could be theme months. Some examples would be bait only (you can use lures to catch your bait if you like), lure and fly only, and low tech - one rod/line, one or two rig/lure(s).

I'll enter it no matter what the format, but if I win anything I want the wooden spooner to get my prize as an encouragement award.

The only problem I have is actually measuring the fish, as with cod I just like to lift them from the water, take pic, and release, I would be happy to have some kind of measure on my rod for pics if everyone was happy the marks were certified by AKFF members.

Cheers, Allan

Alan, its great to hear of a fisherman who holds the fish he targets in such high regard, not for their taste but for their athletic ability and cunning, good fish are far too good to catch just once, and to see cod like that released with a smile and a wink makes me feel pretty good.Good on you mate :D :D

Excellent Job Dave :!: The thing I like best about the comp is we can all share the experience and how the fish was caught. I love going back to what people caught.

I like the idea of the first two weekend in the month but I am not too fussed about it. It might be worth while that you can enter only one species (the largest one counts) and keep a running tally on species over the year. This way we can compare types of fish caught eg freshwater verus saltwater or even the total number of species for the year.

The idea paying or entry fee will become to complicated and may limit the entries. If we could find a sponser we might be able to give prizes out. Another Idea would be to give e-certificates out or have a hall of fame for the month with a pic of the catch and a mugshot of the winner(s), don't forget an encouragement award for all those who enter, try really hard and endup catching bait (like some of us in Canberra with the amount (tiny) redfin we seem to catch.)

If any money was involved I would perfer donations to the site and the money best used for all members, fish comp, updates for the site, ...

I would like to see this idea continue but doesn't need to much change.

Top work Dave, :D

You have done a wonderful job for the year with the fishing comp. My only input is to make the comp span 2 weekends so it gives people a chance to fish if the weather is bad or family commitments.
Say from Saturday to the following Monday. I also don't think the financial contribution would work, we fish for the love of it and just enjoy the reconition of the victory. I am sure Karl will enjoy his victory by bragging until the next champion is crowned.

All in all it's great fun and can't wait for next year, so keep it going no matter how it is decided to run.

Dave I would only like to address the state v state issue with some members active in their state with no result to record a score [see Dec]

Years ago we addressed a similar problem at Port Macquarie FC by ensuring any entrant got points to acknowledge his entry as part of the cumulative annual score.

First we upgraded from 10 to 0 points, and increased it to 100 - 0 per round

Gradings were first place 100 then down to fifth at 50 points, and the major change was later in the rankings, all lower placed fish got 30 points regardless of place, and all non fish entrants got 15 points for participation in the comp

We found that this kept our comp far more vigorous for the total year as annual points started to accrue, and with a name on the score sheet the members continued to front up later in the year rather than dwindle away

With participation points being available, the representation of the state would still be acknowledged regardless of there being no fish to show with the recording of minor points.

For me if an akffer said I fished with no result, I would be prepared to accept that as a statement of fact, rather than question the entry, as the points are minimal and no ones ego needs 15 points that desperately I don't think

I also don't think trophies have any influence on a comps success

Heya Allan,

Most of the guys here use Brag Mats to measure their catch. You can pick them up for about $14 I think from A-Mart.

They are made from the same material as the Environet, just wet em down a little and lay your Cod down gently and they should stay in good health for release :)

I'd like to see it run for two weeks as well. I'm usually lucky to get out the week that the comp is running, in fact I dont think I have ever managed to?, when I have managed to get out and caught some fish worthy of entry it has been outside of the comp window.

I also reckon prizes will complicate the process and we'll end up with complaints in the regular monthly comp.

If we were looking at some kind of prize, maybe we could have a 'Fish of The Year' at the end of the comp which is voted for by members via a poll?

Dallas,

You mean one of these

I just dont think it practical considering the extra time needed to get the fish on the mat when fishing from the yak, cod can stress very easily and I prefer best practice C&R for them, from the boat the mats are great tho.

I'll probably just put a fisheries sticker on the side of the yak and hold the fish against it for a pic, I just like the idea of a quick as possible release.

Is the sticker idea acceptable?

No problems by me.

The 2006 competition was based on trust and best efforts in measuring their catch with what ever was on hand. Some used sewing measuring tape, brag mat, metal measuring tape or fisheries sticker.

I think in the end it is the fun of the competition more so than how well you can measure of your catch.

My option ...

I just want to have fun fishing in a Yak, every now and then a little bit of bragging  doesn't go astry. We are luckly we don't have a section on "The one that got away ... you should have sent it!"

the fisheries sticker idea is easy as. i put mine on my paddle handle, so the paddle sits across my lap when (if!) i need to measure something, as thats where the fish ends up anyway.

sticker hasnt peeled yet, and i manage to treat my gear fairly poorly! might clear-lacquer it or something. just an idea....

Thats a top idea, I'll give it go.

Thanks for that.

Dave,

Well done with the comp, was great to read about but unfortunately i didnt get to participate due to fishing outside of the time frame or not carrying measurement, if the comp was increased to 2 weeks i would surely manage to enter some next year.

I have a brag mat but wouldnt consider that viable unless i was keeping the catch for a feed, i like the fisheries sticker idea on the paddle ( even though i pedal on my Hobie a paddle is always bungeed to the left of the yak ), my old man got given one at a boatramp last year and all enquiries into getting one for personal use have hit dead ends.

Any ideas?
