Home made DOWN RIGGER

Postby GetSharkd » Tue Aug 21, 2012 7:45 pm

G'day all

I thought I'd have a crack at buildling a down rigger , couldn't justify the cost of a scotty unit for the few times I would utilise it so this is the end result. Fairly happy with it and it only cost me $25 :D Happy Days !

I sourced all the stainless from a scrap off cuts ( thanks to the engineers at one of my job sites ) , utilised a scotty rod holder that can easily be reverted back to a rod holder when required. Used an old Alvey reel rescued from a junk pile that needed a new lease of life :)

Cut a stainless back plate to the shape of the scooty rod holder base so it couldn't move

Welded frame of Alvey to back plate .Also welded a stainless nut in position to suit original scotty bolt and position

welded a small D to the stainless rod and bought a small sailing pulley from marine shop

Finished Down rigger :D

Looks like the old slogan 'An Alvey reel fills the creel' is going to continue in another form, nice job mate.

Sorry mate , it's a "limited addition" ;-) But so simple to make if you have an old Alvey lying around

Well done, I have made something similar, Having no stainless welding skill, i have used an old rod but and an ALVEY reel. What are you going to use for line, I have put wire on and find it a bit of a struggle with it spooling off.

Here is photos of mine, I made my own mould for the downrigger bomb using a tennis ball and a piece of timber for the fin to create the shape, I used some mortar to make the mould, Got two pours out of it before it got trashed. Used a alligator clip with some clear plastic tubing over the teeth. Yet to try it.
