QLD Moffats 5/8 whoops

Postby imnotoriginal » Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:39 pm

The plan was to fish off Moffats this morning as seabreeze and the weather gods seemed inclined to give a lovely Sunday. Got down to the ramp to be greeted by bugger all wind and flat seas. It was bloody freezing, but at least the water looked calm, good conditions :) got all the gear together and launched and then looked behind me... Where did my second rod go??? After a frantic search with a few of the other yakkers it was located in about 4 foot of water right in front of where I'd launched. The only piece of equipment not tethered down on the yak, bloody Murphy! A big thanks to Mark (bogey) and the other kayaker who stayed with me to help me find it. Lesson learned the hard way :?

Eventually got back on the water and I followed the crowd out towards Brays. I don't currently have a sounder so it's all guess work for me out on the big sea. I trolled all the way there with only one touch on the halco laser pro, which left teeth marks but failed to hook up. Once out at Brays I drifted around with plastics getting occasional hits. I ran into a patch of yellowtails or slimy mackerel, which were smacking my plastic despite it barely fitting in their mouth. After a couple I moved on as I was chasing something more substantial. Not much else around and as the sun started to get quite high I made a move back to Moffats. I trolled back gong quite close to Shelly beach and was surprised by how much rubble and rock there is not far out from the beach. The water was very clear, but no fish n sight only the odd dolphin. No touches on the lure on the way back. Thankfully coming back in was far less eventful. A beautiful day to be on the water, despite the lack of decent fish landed. Now comes the fun part trying to salvage the reel after the dunking it took.

Happy to help Joel.
I knew if we kept at it for a while we would find it - such clean water - hope the reel comes up OK.
Ended up with a nice little grassy and a bit better snapper ( around 45cm)
Heard Damo got a nice snap AND a dirty great longtail - hopefully we get to hear more about that on Wednesday at the Tavern.
Cheers mate

Nice fish Damo. What size lure did it take?
Joel,I dunked a reel twice this weekend when the sail rope flicked the rod out. Rod leashes pay for themselves over and over. Cant decide whether to service or replace.
You should have hooked up one of those slimies Joel. Thats probably why the big longtails were mooching around.

I didn't have any live baiting tackle with me unfortunately paulo. My rod went over the side when takin the paddle off the side keeper. I will be tethering them all now. I have rinsed out the exceller in fresh, I hope that is enough, it's probably not worth the full servicing cost.

I certainly got all excited seeing you come back in before I even set off with that dirty great thing taking up most of your deck space.

.....Especially for a newb on his maiden voyage......

Didn't help though....just managed to donate countless flies to the reef. The current was playing havoc with my line management. Anyway, great day to be out and take a few wildlife snaps

Cheers

90mm. Looked like it had been feeding on 50mm white bait. Had 2 old hooks in its stomach strangely enough.

Thanks Damo. The family will be eating longtail for a while then? :)
Always keen to know whats in their stomachs. I thought the white bait cleared out in winter. I wonder what was eating the slimies then.
