Ukulele anyone?

Postby fisher » Sun Jul 01, 2012 3:35 pm

I'm thinking of getting myself a ukulele and then trying to learn to play. Does anyone have any opinions on whether a 52yo man with fat fingers and zero music skill will ever be able to get a decent tune happening? Any recommendations on what to get or what to avoid? Any good or bad news stories out there?

A ukelele and decent music? That's an oxymoron isn't it?

I picked mandolin to learn a few years ago...... I had no musical talent or background and after lots of lessons, I still have no talent but enjoy playing. Look at concert size uke which may be easier to learn with. But depends how much you want to spend to start. Ask around any music shops if they have anyone who teaches ukelele , look up Jake Shimabukuro for what can be done with a ukelele.

Could be handy if you break a paddle?

Then again if you keep feeding it it might grow up and get a couple more strings and become a real instrument!!

Could have been worse, might have been a Banjo.

Fat fingers makes it tough. A lack of finger span (pinky to index) is worse. It can be stretched, but ...
Notice that all the great guitarists have long thin fingers. You can get around it (Angus) but it's frustrating.

Fat fingers and zero talent are almost mandatory for quality uke playing.
