Qld: Flat, flat, flat

Go on then, tell us how you went...

Qld: Flat, flat, flat

Postby kayakone » Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:05 pm

I was feeling flat.

But regardless, I had to paddle today (not so much fish, as paddle, paddle .... getting rid of stress, and communing with the sea).

Scarby was predicted to be a bit windy today, but I was paddling anyway (cause I have an operation coming up which will rule out paddling for some time). Liam and Jimbo were there, and at least 3 other fishing yaks. Interestingly, two of those yaks were yellow Hobie Tandems, with akas or amas .... Anyone from AKFF?

It was a cold start, so I stayed in bed, and on a late arrival, saw that the sea was flat, with a light westerly trickling. I checked in with Jimbo on the VHF at 8 am as I launched. His reply, "nothing". Therefore I elected to stay in close. Five minutes and 200 metres later a yellow-tailed pike took a liking to a 90 mmm HB (reputedly good-for-anything bait).

A further five minutes and a decent run had me guessing ...it was a reasonable flathead, best for a long while.

(continued in part 2)

Not today ... one go last week Stevie. Planning to make a few alterations .... e.g. I do a lot of trolling so I want to fit rod holders that widely separate the two trolling lines. I'm looking at the Railblza products in keeping with your pimping.

I'll post some pics when finished and first blooded.

Hi Trev
Sounds like a good morning for the AI. I had a family commitment Sunday, so that was out for me.
oh, and .....Sorry, I piked on the Sunny Coast on Saturday. With the swell still hanging in I decided to have a nice morning on the water off Scarby. I really didn't want to risk any breakages seeing as we've got a week away on the NSW north coast coming up.
See you on the water soon. Yep, I'm missing the Moreton trip too! Next time.
Cheers

You would have been fine launching at the Spit (right next to the breakwater). Kingdan did it, no problems, but just like yesterday very light winds to glassy. Unfortunately on Saturday there were no fish, apart from Ido's friend. (I am out of action for a few weeks)

I thought this thread would be about Condominiums in Queensland.

Get well K1. FIDO principle applies.

Part 2 will be when he gets the photos going...

Liam... I thought you were heading home when you left me... quite some time later, there you are with Trev, taking piccies of his flatty...

Up till this time, all my fish had quick-released themselves, (except the sole you saw me catch,) including something in the pelagic style that took the Sebile Koolie, but dropped it after streaking off for about forty metres.

After chasing and not quite getting close enough for catching the buggers with metal slugs, it took a hard-body then spat it!

Soon after, I snagged twice in quick succession on both drifting outfits, decided to call it quits from that area, headed shorewards to do a drift outwards with the Westerly, but found when I got there, the breeze had switched to Southerly, so had to change course to drift with that wind.

I re-rigged the overhead outfit and cast it out... that was about when you were hitting the beach... then, as I began tying the lilechick on the other line, the overhead lot tore off! After a little tussle, a 56cm snapper hit the deck and was released... pretty well as soon as the other outfit was re-rigged and cast, it also tore off... this one was only 43cm, but very welcome.

Trev called then to say he'd got another flattie, and was going to have a paddle out to the blinker, to get some paddle time in.

Straight after that, another snapper liked the lilechick, and soon hit the deck... 38cm. After that, due to the wind cutting out altogether, I decided to look for Trevor and headed out to do a troll in the beacon area, but couldn't for the life of me find K1... I guessed he was in the area that I couldn't see properly due to the sun-shine on the water.

He called later to tell me he'd just got a whopper flattie and had a Sebile lure cut off! (wasn't a happy chappy about that) and when I asked him where he'd been when I was looking for him, he'd been chasing bust-ups 2 kilometres wide of the beacon... no wonder I couldn't see him.

I trolled in and called it a day, and before I had tied the yak down, Trev rolled into shore to show me the flatties, and of course take some piccies. I think that both of them were bigger than any I've ever landed... lovely fish!

Liam... remember that I was going to fish in close... travel in with you as you headed in to go home... but then we saw the bust-ups and chased them? when I finally got to fish in close, three snapper claimed me for their long lost friend (after I had released them). Until then I'd fished out wide, and landed nothing.

You were right!

That was a nice lot of fish you finished up with... lovely weather, good fish... what more could you ask for?

Jim I was heading straight to shore when I hooked another tailor. It fought even harder than the last one! Big dramas getting him into the net, I need a longer handle. After I hooked that fellow I thought I would nip over and say hi to Trev. Except the bugger kept paddling away from me. He caught some nice flatties. It was a beautiful day on the water.

Part 2 continued

I paddled here, I paddled there. I paddled 500 metres to say hello to the tandem peddle yak (has to be a Hobie), but 2 pairs of flippers are better than me, as off they went towards Osbourne Pt, leaving me behind. So back I went northwards, for a km or so, till I saw a yak making a beeline for me from way out to sea. I slowed down and, looking right, recognised Liam. As he arrived in his Adventure, he informed me my left side rod was on, despite barely moving.

Fair weight and plenty of good short runs, so I picked it for a good flatty. Liam circled while I tried 4 or 5 times to net it, failing each time as it ran strongly away from the yak. Finally (photo courtesy of Liam).....

Liam was off for an afternoon shift, and I continued a paddle northwards. Half an hour later, another biggish run, and a similar to and fro yielded her sister ....

BTW..the Stealth BFS fish hatch is 60 cm long. Last 2 fish 65 & 63 cm long.

I'm no longer feeling flat, and guess what I'm having for dinner? (thanks to Scott for uploading all the pics )

Hey Trev... I sneaked a couple of your flathead yesterday while you were waiting for your op at the PA... and then stole a bunch of your tailor, a snap and pike... took a couple of tailor home for an old friend who can't catch his own fish now... the rest are back swimming.

Sebile Koolie caught the lot, bar the snap... don't you just love that lure?

Yes Jim, I did love those lures.

I bought 2, for $ 17.50 & $ 20, and last Monday, first try of the lures, lost one to a tailor (bitten off). It was the 76 mm ($ 17.50) in Rainbow trout colour, so if anyone catches a tailor with that piercing, I'd like it back.

On Wednesday, I was paddling around Redcliffe Pt with Killer, when a shark took the other one, the 90 mm Bronze coloured one
($ 20). Bitten off again! Returns accepted with thanks.

I was perfectly happy previously, as hardly a fish would interrupt my paddling by attacking my lures. As a result, I hardly ever caught a fish, or lost a lure. :D The problem with these lures is that they attract fish!!  (now that you are on commission from Sebile, you should be making a fortune  )
