I was listening to John Safran on JJJ last night. He usually has some interesting guests and true to form they spoke with a retired CIA fellow. I was quite impressed with the interview, the bloke (goes by the name of Glenn Carle) came across as both very intelligent and had an interesting story to tell. I went home and downloaded the book. Excellent so far, well written and interesting to boot.

Just finished Hugh Laurie's The Gun Seller. Excellent read with plenty of British sarcasm wrapped around an action plot.

Now reading Game of Thrones by George R R Martin to see what all the hype is about. Still got about 500 pages to go but it seems pretty epic so far.

"How to be assertive in any situation" by Sue Hadfield and Gill Hasson, in preparation for my mediation session in Court with my ex on 14 June. Wonder if I can also bring a bottle of scotch, a bible and a .45 Colt...

He told us about Christ's disciples being fishermen, and we were to assume, as my brother and I did, that all first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fishermen and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman

Trainspotting. It's doing my head in - written in Scottish slang (at least it's phonetic). Plus - if you're in any doubt that the current legal penalties for drug users have any bearing on whether they use or not, this book will beat that out of you. Harrowing, black reading.
Cheers

A Dance With Dragons by George R.R. Martin. 5th book in his Song Of Ice And Fire series that has been adapted for the HBO mini series A Game Of Thrones.

I have been reading the fantasy genre since a teenager and this is some of the best I have come across. The tv series is a credit to its makers too, very true to its source and stacked with credible acting performances. Probably something to do with being filmed in Europe rather than the US!!!

^Yeah we don't have any castles, and if we did, we'd level them for a strip mall or fast food joint.

Ant,

Irvine Welsh's novel Glue is one of his best. More character based than trainspotting. About four friends growing up and driafting apart. Mixes some characters from trainspotting. Characters from Glue also mix with Trainspotting characters in Porno, part two of Trainspotting. This is also a good read. You find the more you read his books the easier it is to understand.

Read & enjoyed Trainspotting. Read & disliked Filth, just a bit too grim for me, without making much of a point. Grubby.

When Hamish Macbeth was on the TV years ago, my wife used to make me put the subtitles on. English isn't her first language, but her comprehension & vocabulary are superior to many native speakers, however UK regional accents leave her floundering.

about 1/3 in - not one of Mark Kurlanskys better efforts (compared with "Salt", "Cod" and "The Big Oyster" anyway)
