You will be glad to know that this is not an Ant or Chris report where you need the entire page to see the fish. Conditions were fantastic again, small swell breaking onto the beach and a quick paddle out to miss the odd swell that would break on the sand bar. Doesn't get much easier. Amazingly it was very quite out, was as last week was a plethora of boats today there was only a few out wider and the only other kayak I saw was Chris before he launched. Had the place to myself which was nice, but somewhat unsettling at the same time.
Decided to stay close around the reef to explore a bit more as it was only my third time out and I'm still not real familiar with the area. Had an early hit on my trolling rig and started stripping line quickly but as I went to grab the rod it went quiet. Disappointed is an understatement, have been waiting for my turn to pull a good mackeral or tuna. Did see what I think was a few small tuna busting up the surface very early but they moved on pretty quickly. Had no further luck with trolling.
Spent a bit of time bottom bashing with some baits and saw some reasonable action, but unfortunately nothing of size. Picked up a nice stipped barracuda?? and threw him out the back on the off chance something bigger was lurking around but allas there was no such luck.
Well after releasing a black tip cod, grinner, seargent baker and a few pieces of the reef I was nearing the end of my bait supply. Decided to move back over a spot that had given action earlier in the morning and got a good hit followed by a fubble of the hooks. Rebaited and dropped again, bigger hit this time and the hook stuck. In fear of loosing the best fish of the day, I backed the drag off a little but very quickly I had my first kayak caught squire landed. Quickly got him squared away once I knew he was big enough and dropped the last piece of bait for the hope of a second.
All in all, a great morning. Starting to get a little more familiar with the area and very happy with the changes I'd made to my rigs and setup. And not to be forgotten, the new PB squire which ultimately measured in at 32 to the fork and 36 to the tip of the tail. Hope everyone else's morning were as enjoyable.
