Something to make your blood boil, Sir?

Postby mingle » Mon May 21, 2012 7:52 pm

Just came across this...

http://www.kalahari-trophy-hunting.com/ ... kages.html

I'm sure it's probably one of many such sites, but I couldn't bring myself to search for any more...

Now I'm no hunter, but where's the thrill in bagging a zebra? Or a mother impala and her calf?

Mingle, got your concern. But what's wrong with hunting a Zebra? Or a Springbok?

I tried springbok during my Recent Africa trip. Seemed a bit like lamb. I did feel a little uncomfortable. But not because someone may have shot it. I felt a little like a tourist eating Roo or Croc in Aus. A tad too touristy.

Whats wrong with shooting a zebra? Particularly in an environment which monitors kill impact on the herd (s). It's not like, I don't know, hunting Rhino or leopard. Hardly threatened (or have I missed something).

And it's Africa. Different mores entirely.

Yeah I agree with Dru ,

I am certainly no hunter myself but the animals listed are far from endangered. I know that a lot of the game reserves in South Africa Cull such animals ( much like they do with camels here in Aus- the difference being that these actually provide meat -popular meat ) . Once again I am no hunter but I don't differentiate between hunting game and spearing a fish ....

I certainly don't agree with wasting ( and just like I wouldn't keep a fish I wouldn't eat- I m allergic but that's besides the point) majority of the kills are for the meat .

I used to shoot mountain zebras in Namibia to feed endangered vultures at what was called a vulture restuarant on top of a hill, this was done because the vultures had been poisoned in the old days because people believed they hunted livestock. The carrying capacity of the land has to be taken into account when wildlife is fenced off and ancient migration routes are no longer possible,I think the Kruger park was looking at opening up large wilderness areas with Mozambique and Zim to recreate some of the old migration routes.

Need to hunt more whales, these bloody things are everywhere and since they have all but stopped whaling the oceans are getting fuller and small pacific islands are disappearing.
Time to thin them out a bit.

I'm going to agree with many of the comments above. If its not an at risk species it's fair game in my book. I find it interesting that society gasps at the thought of slaying anything other than paultry, lamb, beef or fish. I don't think of myself as a cruel person, just one who believes we should be able to kill and eat whatever animal, regardless of how chte they are, provided we do so as humanely and sustainably as possible.

Hypocrisy? Maybe, but I think we are all guilty of that from time to time. I mean I find enjoyment in torturing fish for up to a few minutes, before throwing them back from where they came. That's pretty cruel if you think about it!

I don't find hunting offensive. Endangered animals yes, but the ones listed on that site are not endangered. I was expecting to see dead Rhino, Elephants and big cats.

Yeah, my blood's boiling.

OK, pretty unprecedented to have this ~75# cat (an adolescent) so far into an urban area, but it seems like they didn't know WTF to do about it.
They attempted to tranq it with a dart, sprayed it with fire hoses, shot pepper balls at it, it "became agitated" and charged and was shot dead with several rounds for "public safety". Well no shit it became agitated. You agitated it. Granted tranqs are hard to use efficiently by a gun, but I think running the risk of overdosing it with multiple darts would be safer than using almost every means possible to piss it off, then shooting it.

You think you got problems Zed?

Wait till you see the kangaroos in George Street CBD Brissie.

http://www.brisbaneishome.com/kangaroo- ... -brisbane/

Seriously, though, in National Parks, where people sometimes feed them (or leave food out), they can be aggressive, and dangerous, though not on the same scale as mountain lions and bears. Oz is pretty good in that respect...on the land there are no man killers (apart from many of the the most venemous snakes in the world, oh, and spiders, like the funnel web.
