supalite x or evolution 430 ???????need advice

Postby pauly200200 » Mon May 14, 2012 4:06 pm

the time has come to get a proper kayak for inshore work, and whilst settled on a Stealth, I am torn between a Supalite x or an evo 430
Chasing opinions on what would best suit me, and the fishing I intend to do from it.

I weigh 78kg, am 5.8ft tall,i have not done a great deal of paddling.as ive used a hobie revolution
The yak will be used for surf launches, and within a few kms of shore (depending on how my confidence builds as I get better).
Fishing will be by trolling lures, and then dead bait fishing when I am in need of a break from paddling. Intending to target tuna, mackeral, or anything else that will take trolled lures or dead baits.im not sure on the supalite speed for trolling lures,

The Supalite x looks like it would suit what I am after perfectly, but it's lack of speed (7/10) compared to the evolution 430 (9/10)
i dont want to make a mistake and buy the wrong kayak for myself,as i cant affort to buy another yack its just the hobie revolution kayak
doesnt cut it for me it has alot of down falls for offshore and surf launches, and is slow robust sluggy..also takes on alot of water..
Would appreciate any info from guys who have tried these kayaks, or would care to advise on which one may be most suitable.
cheers pauly

If you are looking at regular surf launches, I reckon the supalite x is the way to go.

I found the supalite x paddle at about the same speed as any of the other 4.1m kayaks - same as my kingfisher would. The only real advantage it has over your revo is the ability to launch through surf - it will be no lighter, no quicker, no easier to paddle.

Isnt there a dealer up your way? Only way to decide is to get a test paddle.
If the evo had been out when I bought my old BFS I would have bought the evo becse I didn't do alot of surf launches.
You suggest you will do lots of surf and not too much distance so I would go with the supalite.

Paully,
For your weight supaliteX,if you were confident in the surf and had some experience I would then go for the Evo 465 not the 430 in my opinion ,the supaliteX is no slouch and I would rate it highly for surf and fish ability ,most of your fishing will not be done more than 2 km out and on good days you may end up going to the gravel without a problem .
You can always get a second hand Evo later once you have gained experience etc ......... Hope this helps 8)
I live with fear every day......
but sometimes she lets me go fishing!!!!

Safa, on the money!

PaulLy, both fantastic yaks. Clearly the design of the Superlite is more intended for surf. The 430 I would choose for estuary as a primary target and for occasional coastal hunt for pelagics. For hunting pelagics it's the 465 unless it's too big to store?

Getting in and out of the surf is a highly focused part of coastal fishing, and on GC it will be surf. That said, it's a small part of the journey. And you'll quickly work your way through it.

The Supalite X should be perfect for your weight class, ability and what you want to do with it. It handles well in the surf and is more than quick enough...

If you are going to play in the suds then its one of the supalite series, the long ski's are nice in clean water but hard in the bubbles.

I paddle a supalite and are similar weight and height as you. I reckon it copes with the surf as well as anything else out there. Feels like a surf ski. I did notice my knees are a bit higher than I'd like but its not a real problem.

The surf zone has its challenges, I come off regularly :) The supalite has plenty of stow space so all the gear is safe if you flip. Also has a sealed compartment behind you that can double as a livey tank. Very cool if live baiting is your thing.

Planning for fairly flat days is the go. I use these for swell forcast. The graphs are helpfull.
