Hey Kerry,
Hope it all turns out ok for your son, sounds like his spirits aren't too low if he can have a laugh at you and your wife stuck in the lift. As for your daughter, making her suffer through a broken foot for all that time... I suspect you will be paying for that many, many years to come ;-)

She is at that age where she often yell "I hate this stupid boot and I would sooner just dance on my broken foot, I'm only wearing this for you".
What can you do.

My son had surgery again this morning to remove the rest of the gauze and repair the hole.
He was back on the ward singing and cracking jokes in no time. I asked for some of the same drug but was declined.

Waiting for a full debrief from the doc but my insider information tells me that it is confirmed as a type of staph infection.
The treatment is usually 3 to 4 weeks of intravenous antibiotics.

Just got the good and bad news scenario.
All going well, he may be able to go home tomorrow.
The bad news is that he has to stay on a drip for the next 3 weeks and then 2 weeks on tablets.
They will put a different type of cannula ( a deeper one that is more robust).
It sounds like it is then a portable unit and with the crutches he should be able to get back to school.

All this from a swollen ankle that looked like any other ankle injury to begin with.
He'll have to make up a story for when people ask what he did to his ankle because the correct answer 'nothing', takes too long to explain.

Kez, a mate's dad had a hip replacement which then ended up with a staph infection, which needed an extended period of antibiotics. They managed to rig up some sort of motorised dispenser that he wore on his belt, which continually delivered the antibiotics to the wound via a canula.

Same sort of thing for your lad?

PS don't tell him that mixing cheap champagne and antibiotics is a sure way to get yourself absolutely ripped.
Cheers

He's feeling better and causing chaos on the ward.
Wheel chair races with his sister and he has found the girls, so I'm pretty sure they will try to send him home tomorrow. :-)

Feel for you Keza, hope things end up well.

My Step Brother went through something similar a couple of years ago, almost lost his leg...

Glad to hear things are looking up. I think he'll be much better out of hospital than in while recovering. From experience, i'd go canadian crutches rather than the normal ones, much more comfortable

Still waiting for info but it doesn't look like I'll be taking him home today.
He has to be on the drip for 2 more weeks before going on to tablets. God I hope they don't want him to stay here much longer.

This place (especially the operating rooms) is filled with great fittings for a bait tank.
I'll have to bring a bigger bag. :-)

Back in to theatre to fit the picc line today.
Yesterday was full of politics, as there is a recent case that went wrong with a picc line in a baby, so the children's hospital wont fit them but the infectious diseases department is insisting.
Something must have been agreed, as it goes in today.

The entertainment came when Mr Mundine came into the room and I realised that the kid in the bed opposite was the one that got shot at kings cross.
With him and the parents in the room all day and visits from groups from all different services, having ultra sounds of his heart etc etc, I was surprised they discussed the case so openly infront of us (un the other side of a curtain).
All very enlightening.

Max's cannula tissued again late last night. They only last 2 days with these antibiotics.
Maybe we'll get him home tomorrow.

Back to the original title.
This is where things get tricky for a taxi driver.
The day is planned out: I have an osteo appointment first thing (back trouble caused by not enough time in the kayak).
Then off to the hospital to sign the papers and get Max in to surgery for the picc.
Then pic up my daughter and take for for another xray before her appointment with the specialist.

First I get the call from max, informing me that he just had a big breakfast !!! WTF you are nil by mouth for surgery !!!, sorry forgot.
Then the specialist calls and wants to move Maiya's appointment to earlier in the day....
I give up, I'm not making plans anymore, it can just happen to me.

PIC lines, geez kerry ,they've come a long way with the new "hospital in the home' method of care. still probably a good thing if it gets him back to school early.

i remember when they were invented in the 80's and we used to call them sub clavicular lines because you used to get a large knitting needle type needle and shove it under the collar bone until blood poured out and then thread a plastic tube over it and try and position it just short of the heart.

i remember the horrible hissing of air when you realized you'd punctured the lung
then you used to have to connect the tube to a jar of water as the patient "breathed " the air out thru an underwater tube(sort of like clearing a snorkel)

geez the worlds come a long way.

whats the name of the antibiotic is it ticarcillin, anyway much better to feed it in centrally to stop having drips tissue every 48 hours.

all the best for the young fella.
i know youre from NZ. is their any maori blood in the young guy. they seem particularly susceptible to staph and the infectious disease fellows think it is a genetic factor.

Keza i really feel for you. Sometimes it is easier to just bend over and let them have their way with you. Hope it all turns out ok in the end.

The antibiotic is Flucloxicilin.
No Maori blood that I was told about :-)

Because he ate this morning, they are going to do it with him awake.
I got the call to rush down because they were going to take him. It took me 15 mins and 10 to find a park.
I came in and they said we missed the slot and it would either be tonight or tomorrow now.
Who can get to the hospital any quicker than that ???

So hard watching a system with small faults that would be pretty easy to fix. Who the hell chooses the colours in this place, someone from the eye ward ?
Why can't Dulux sponsor it.
Paint each room in a nice colour scheme and put a plac on the wall telly you what the colours are they have used.
Good advertising for them and a nicer environment for the patients.
