I realised something today which many of you could have told me soon after my very first post….I’m full of shit.
When I go live baiting for barra, I try to use a bait that’s at least 20cm long, usually over 30cm is preferred. My theory has always been it eliminates the catfish and small barra bycatch. With big bait you can only catch big fish so you don’t waste time on the numerous average sized ones. That’s my theory and that’s what I’ve always stuck to.
I know what I’m talking about right? I catch metre plus fish every year and that makes me an expert who knows everything there is to know right?
Why the bloody hell, when I fish with soft plastics, do I used the little 3” and 4” plastics to try and catch the same fish?
If you asked me why I was using that size lure at the time, my reply would be that big fish will take small lures too. We all know that’s correct, we’ve all caught big fish on little baits right?
So, why do I use big live baits to catch only big fish and then not also use big soft plastics for the same reason? It’s like I have 2 theories, one for bait and one for lures, isn’t a theory a theory regardless or do we just make shit up to build a justification around why we do stuff we are going to do anyway? Has anyone else realised they have contradictory theories?
I haven’t wet the kayak in 3 weeks and 2 days and have been sitting on tractor seats for 15-18hr days for most of that time. Now, and you would have all just realised this too, I have a good excuse to post some fish photos to illustrate my point….in my head at least.
