Well all good things come to a end !

I have been catching legal (>75cm) Mulloway from my yak now for 2 1/2 years but unfortunately it looks like I have been dumped and left with the 6 kids

Click on the photos if you wish to enlarge.

Some nice fish there.
I was curious so I looked up the minimum legal size of a Cod in SA. Are they really not allowed to be kept there at all? If so, why do they then have a closed season?
Cheers

Any Murray Cod caught in S.A.'s part of the Murray system in the so called open season are not to be removed from the water and must be released whilst in the water. During the closed session you are not even permitted to target Cod. These regulations are in place to assist the Cod numbers to increase in the wild.

Junglefisher, safwaa has access to around 30 private waters (for members only) and have been stocking them legally with fingerlings (brown & raindow trout ; cod ; catfish ; golden perch / yellow belly) for around 20years. All our club native fish are returned to the water as they don't breed in these systems. Due to all these restrictions and the limited fresh water fishing in SA this is why I am led to believe safwaa is SA's largest fishing club. Brilliant club.

I never realised that freshwater fishing was so restricted down there. I guess you don't have a lot of rivers to start with.

Squidley they certainly are :D . A couple of my mates use to do very well using spinnerbaits (pre bans etc), Paul's son Mike (safwaa Stolky) has actually caught a bigger one, around 80lb. :D and was released to fight another day.

One of the reasons for closed season is that the male cod guards the eggs during incubation and guards the hatched larvae till they leave the nest site,it is believed if caught during this time protecting the nest it will not return leaving the eggs/larvae to fall prey to other fish.

Squidley is correct!

Bylaw 27 of the South Australian fisheries act of 2012 clearly states -
"It is illegal to catch or harrass freshwater species of any kind while being in possession of secret mulloway spot knowledge."

So there Steve, cough up that secret knowledge.
