Norman,
By choosing the right launch location and the right day to do it, you can almost negate the "surf launch" on the sunny coast. The spit at M'Ba is a good spot, Moffats beach and wade out a little bit before you jump on, Kings Beach at the northern end in a NE'er, Middle Groyne at Noosa. It takes a little bit of getting used to but you'll find there are a few places that you can get out in the briny without the fear on crunching all your gear. If you are unsure, then de-rig, put everything in/on the yak so you don't break it and paddle like crazy!!!
Cheers,
Jon
