Biloela?

Postby Cresta57 » Wed Mar 28, 2012 5:12 pm

I've got a week to ten days work up in Biloela from tomorrow, as it's a 5 hr drive from home I'll be staying in a motel, so can't really justify taking the yak. I'm wondering if the creek/river or the Callide Dam is worth a flick from the bank if only to keep me out of the pub for a few nights? My job is right on the junction of the Dawson highway & the Callide dam road.

I have no idea about the fishing bit stayed there during a work trip about 8 years ago and at the place I had dinner (can't remember the name) had the best EVER steak I've eaten.

Have tried steak a couple of times at one of Sydney's finest restaurants and it's got nothing compared to THAT steak! :)

Good luck fishing!

Callide Dam, just west of Biloela, is one of Qld's newest Barra dams, and already has meter+ monsters.
It also has Saratoga, Yellowbelly, Silver Perch, Eel Tailed Catfish, Sleepy Cod, Spangled Perch, Alligator Gar and Eels.

Might be worth dragging the yak afterall. ;)

AKFF member 'Feral' has been out there.
Ausfish says 'creek to coast tackle' in town, is worth checking out for local conditions: (07) 4992 1288

Been to callide dam years ago, there would definitely be some huge barra in there...I'd check it out for sure.

Are they really there?
Those fish grow to 2m plus and would be a real problem in our waterways.

Sweetwater says so.. but I have a sneaking suspicion that they're actually talking about freshwater longtom, which are sometimes called alligator gar in Oz.

Well I went up there, spent a week at Biloela, no wi-fi in the donga though. Worked next to the creek for 8 days & didn't get the time to chuck out a single lure. Most days were 12 hr + days, the last one was a 15 hour day followed by a 4.5hr drive back home. I'd go back for sure, only to throw some lures at the fish in the dam.

Not usually for me, I'm a wall & floor tiler. I was asked to do a rush job that another bloke had let the builder down on. Drove up Thursday, wet sealed the job then tiled the bathroom, en-suite, toilet & laundry from floor to ceiling the rest of the week. Very flash job & it was nice to do some quality work instead of the usual cheap & nasty project builder stuff.

I bet the builder and owner were just as happy to have you do the job too.

We built a house a couple of years ago and I ended up getting a tiler from Brisbane to do the job. He was a young guy trying to get a start and had been caught up in a messy situation where a builder went bust and he left being owed quite a bit of cash. He was a bit cautious at first, as was I, but after a few fresh barra here and there and payment whenever he asked, he did an exceptional job and everyone was happy. His English was almost as bad as my Mandarin but his account at the end was one of the best ones I've ever seen. Everything was itemised in minute detail and exactly as agreed to verbally before he started.

He's still in town 2 years later, has never advertised and goes from job to job purely on his reputation with the tile suppliers, building contractors and happy clients.

It's good to see that you also enjoy doing jobs that aren't just for the sake of meeting a particular price point in a market.
