flush rod holders for trolling?

IMHO every fishing yak needs a couple of flush mounts somewhere even if you don't actually use them for trolling. They will come in handy for storing stuff (gaff, net, flag pole, light pole etc) and do a good job of trolling to boot. I'm also toying with the idea of adding two high rise rod holders just in front of my rear flush mounts just like this viewtopic.php?f=12&t=53195&p=546746&hilit=eco#p546746

like the look of those Paul. the flush mounts are pretty usefull aren't they. There doesn't seem to be a right or wrong answer here tho. Both have merit, but Im leaning towards the bolt on kind for trolling after looking at a lot of the set ups on here. It seems like the rod is more out of the way and better for paddling.

Yes they are mate, at the Wivenhoe Kayak Fishing Convention a couple of years ago I saw at least a dozen blokes wearing them, so came home and bought some with $10 being an average price for summer weight cotton, they are good for the sun and also good if there is a cold breeze about.
Will admit if you can find camo they are less obvious as being PJs but not something I worry about when fishing with mates, and can replace with shorts quickly on return back at the ramp.

If you are trolling in estuaries and other calm waters I definitely recommend a rod holder that can get your rod near parallel with the water and perpendicular to your kayak. Having the rod stick out nice and flat from your yak will give a better action, you can keep an eye on your rod and the lure will get to the desired depths. Always works a treat for me.

Thanks mate. That does seem the way to go. I haven't set it up yet but I will for sure.

I don't think I've ever used the flush mounted ones on my Revo.
PVC pipe is cheap, and the angled fittings are also inexpensive. Zip ties and glue I already had, same for the milk crate.
I built a "bullhorn" type setup with the joins glued in place and the whole thing zip tied to the crate. The crate is attached to the rear deck by pulling the bungee over the bullhorns. No need to unclip the bungee and thread it through. This holds trolling rods pointing slightly up and slightly forward so I can see the tips in my peripheral vision.
It does have its limitations though. Not adjustable - is set up pretty much perfectly for trolling light gear, and probably OK for light set rod/s bait fishing, but wouldn't use it for a heavy rod bottom bashing. Being a Hobie, I seldom use the starboard one, as I hold the rod while pedaling, leaving my left hand free for rudder duties. I do use it to put the rod in when the other one gets a hit though.
I had some pipe left over (bought 3m length) so added 2 more almost vertical holders near the front of the crate and 4 vertical ones at the back. Great for net, flag, light pole...

Two months after posting this, I have finally bought the side mounts for the railbaza rod holder I was gifted and a second rod holder. Also bought a deluxe yak seat. Pics once I have it all set up. Fingers crossed it will be before my 'bidgee adventure on wednesday.

I only use flush mounts which I installed myself when trolling or live baiting. If you are worried about your reels getting too much saltwater, you can insert a length of PVC pipe that fits your holders to keep your reels a little higher above the waterline. The other advantage is that if you are using a rod without a gimbal style butt that locks into the bottom of the holder, you can cut a groove or notch into the PVC pipe to keep your rod/reel facing the direction you want without them spinning around.
