SA: Glenelg 19/2/12

Set the alarm for 5am on Sunday. Got woken up just before that time by heavy rain hitting the iron roof. Went back to sleep and woke up at 6:30am. Thought it was earlier than that as there was still no light outside but soon discovered it was due to the dark cloud.

The yak and everything else was already packed up so thought I'd drive down to Glenelg expecting to see white caps. When I get there conditions were quite good, a bit of swell but only light-moderate winds. The forecast was good for the day so decided to get on the water.

Launched from the end of Broadway and headed straight out from there to about 5.5m of water. Dropped a couple of crab nets and burleyed up for gar.

The crab bait was getting eaten but I wasn't managing to pull anything up. No fish in the burley trail. Moved to 7.5m of water and tried again.

In a couple of hours ended up with 6 big male blue crabs, one squid and only one gar. There was a bit of gar around but there were fare outnumbered by sprat sized tommies which made life difficult.
I kept moving around trying to get away from them, which is a pain when you have crab nets, but the little blighters kept following me.

By the time I got back to shore the wind had dropped completely and the sky was almost cloud free. Had a chat to another member, Murphys Egg, which topped off a pleasant morning. Was very glad to have hauled my butt out of bed.

There are some nice sized Blueys about at the moment. I got a mother on a tommy bait that it refused to let go. ^ big males would have kept the family pleased.

Nice to meet you Boreeng. It was slow going out there on the back of a Dodge. Why do they always seem to fall on a w/end

Great meeting you too ME.

I had the calamari and garfish (from previous trip) for tea tonight; always tastes better when you've caught it yourself.
Am loving fishing from the yak and wish I'd discovered it years ago. Just wish work and family didn't get in the way of getting out more often

Boreeng -There was a bit of gar around but there were fare outnumbered by sprat sized tommies which made life difficult.

Just a note of caution, a number of boaties were taking home small "Tommies" for bait the other day at Outer Harbor.
Those small Tommies were nearly all undersize salmon trout which were in plague proportions.
Nasty surprise if Pirsa checks your catch.
It is hard to tell the difference when they are small, I boated a couple of "Tommies" to use as snapper bait until I had a closer look at them.
Regards,
Mark.
I must be improving everyday!

Good point OldDood. Good information available on PIRSA site on how to differentiate

Hi guys

Have tried using the PIRSA sheet a few time but you'd reckon they could whack in some decent images although it does give you a (ruff) idea. Almost become paranoid about which is the right species now. Reckon the WA fisheries is a bit clearer.

As an aside, went out from Broadway this morning and not a blue swimmer in site, but did find some large Australian Herring 20+cm while looking for Gar, only landed a couple on size 10 long shank :(

Cheers

I had a tommy ruff/salmon trout all-day brain fart last Saturday, I must've thrown back a dozen decent tommies because I was convinced only ST had a yellow eye in spite of the obvious black tips my freed fish had (it's the pectoral fin on an ST that's yellow, both have yellow eyes). Oh well, more fish in the drink to catch later :)
