Moon Island Princes

Headed out this morning all by myself and proceeded to have fun with undersize kings for a few hours. Couldn't get a keeper although I did get dusted up a few times on 25lb briad like it was no where near enough. Caught 15-20 with many missed and the biggest going 63cm

Hopefully next time the big ones are around. Beautiful morning nonetheless.

Malhal

Would 30 lb mono give you more of a safety margin, with the stretch absorbing some of the energy?

More questions...why are most people using braid for such speedsters? If it's better for feel, would 50 lb stop them?

Curious

Hi Mal,
Seems like you had a ball, they seem to be in plague proportions there at the moment. Where do they dissappear to the moment they reach 65cm ......?

Cheers

Looke like a great day on the water. Hit Botany Bay Sun & Tues. Loads of bonnies, salmon and tailor but never saw one king.

Kings generally don't make long runs. They are more about short bursts of speed straight down to the closest structure. The lack of stretch in braid helps to limit how far they can get. 50lb will stop the small fish but I have had a fish of 80cm take line againt heavy drag fishing 50lb on a 16000 Saragosa. Best tactic seems to be to try and tow the fish to deeper water.

I try to head straight for deeper water when I hook up and see where it goes from there. 30lb or 100lb I don't think makes much difference with the amount of drag you can apply from a yak. Either way catching kings from the yak requires a bit of luck and you have to take the good with the bad. In saying that my livie rod runs 30lb mono just for something different, each to there own i say.

May head out again friday.

Thanks Malhal & SharkNett for your replies.

I have only caught a few at Broome's Head and have managed to stop them (with Alveys bolted to the deck). Then again they weren't big.

So I take it is the first run (or two) when they try to reef you. Would you have more chance in an AI...greater resistance to being pulled sideways? I'm keen to know cause I'm going to SWR and to Broomes in late April.

Thanks guys
Trevor
