One of my sons has been at me to read this for a while. Sounds like it needs to move up the list.

If common sense was common, there would be more of it!

Anyone a Hunter S. Thompson fan? I've never read any of his stuff. For those in the know, where do I start? Is it worth it? Lots of fans out there so I take it he's good.

hst - the classics would include

fear and loathing on the campaign trail
fear and loathing in las vegas

i liked http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell%27s_A ... ycle_Gangs

a lot - its not so much the gonzo -earlier stuff

his later stuff really suffered because of his constant drug and alcohol abuse, in my opinion. he deginerated into a rant.

maybe check out the curse of lono.

Pretty much x2. Brad, start with Fear and Loathing Los Vegus. Be warned though, you need a lot of twisted for The Saint Sir Doctor, and it definitely helps if you had a mis-spent youth ensconced in drug culture.

In fact this a blast, I'm going back to re-read this myself.

Just finished "Last Child in the Woods" by Richard Louv. Non-fiction, well worth reading. It makes a really strong argument for the need to re-connect children with nature, to get kids outside and playing again - something that should be pretty close to the heart of all AKFF'ers.

Some of it makes depressing reading - the vastly reduced access children have to nature nowadays, the radical reduction in time kids spend outside, the way that play has become sanitised and totally safe, the way children are actively discouraged by society from building a cubby or climbing a tree. But it's also an uplifting book with a real vision for how we can turn things around and get kids outside in the dirt and the bush where they belong.

Louv is also a keen fly-fisherman :)

I would have sent you off to get The Great Shark Hunt.

It's got bits of everything in there, the immortal opening to Fear and Loathing, the Hunter for Sheriff election, the Jesus Freak memo, material from his Air Force sports writing days, samples of his political writing up to Carter.

I don't think it has, and holding in my hand now and feeling more for heft and nostalgia rather than checking the contents, the short piece he nominated as his favourite bit of writing, which was a description of a high speed bike ride at night through the hills near LA. I'm sure it appeared in Hells Angels originally, but he's reprinted it a few times.

You'll need some golf shoes as well. That's important.

“After Words” - Paul Keating’s collection of post prime ministerial speeches.
