I'm also getting a bit twitchy looking at hiking stoves and tents on eBay... :-)

I think you can't go past the Black Wolf Dragonfly I mentioned earlier in the thread.

I've been looking at tents for a while and this one seems to tick all the boxes.

Hey all AKFF's,
Just a option to throw your way but has anyone checked out the Ray Jardine tarp set ups?
I only camp a couple of times a year but I love the tarp set up, so lightweight and simple and u can cook under it if the weather is bad.
One of my best mates is a mad keen hiker and he uses the tarp set up all the time even in a Tassie winter up the highlands(read snow)!

Anyway check out his website http://www.rayjardine.com/

ive been using a hammock for camping. Ive found it a hell of a lot more comfortabe than sleeping on the ground.
Source my hammock after going thru hammockforum online for research.

I am looking at a hiking style tent for the possibility of some kayak camping during the warmer months. I have spotted a few that have caught my eye:

Black wolf stealth mesh: http://blackwolf.com.au/adventure1000078/stealth-mesh/

Darche hybrid: http://www.darche.com.au/tents/hybrid.html

DMH huon: http://www.wildearth.com.au/huon-person ... p-268.html

Does anyone have any experience with any of these? At the moment I am leaning towards the darche, purely because of the low weight and cost (around $100). Anyone want to talk me out of it??

I'd buy the Darche, I've owned a Darche Swag for 18 years and their reputation and quality is top notch. I'd be happy to own any Darche product.

I own a DHM Huon Tent and have so for the last 12 months, my daughter takes it away regularly on scout / venturer camping trips in all sorts of conditions and has no problems with it. I've read some postings by Kiwi Deer Hunters online who use them and I plan to use it myself when I start camping out on my kayak.

That's an interesting site and prompter for more research. Thanks for posting. Have you experienced heavy rain with a tarp setup?

If common sense was common, there would be more of it!

Heya Surfanfish, the tarp set up is great in the rain and as you might read on the website you dont get any condensation in the tent when its wet as the ventilation is much better than a regular tent. You're right about that Ray Jardine he is a interesting guy and has a lot of great ideas when it comes to hiking, and I like the way he promotes making your own equipment.

Did a trip to BCF today chasing more champing gear in the light weight capacity. I picked a new Blackwolf 65 litre Mountain Ash backpack for half price eg $180 RRP discounted on special for $89.

Also saw a deluxe Roman Self Inflating Matt at $200 RRP discounted on special for $90.

I snapped them both up ASAP. I do other camping etc outside of Kayak Camping so this will a great bargain.

I've read these posts and have to say all the tents mentioned are of excellent quality and it would be hard to compare one against the other. Just goes to show people on this thread definitely know there gear and use top quality camping equipment. EG Anything from Blackwolf etc is a winner hands down.

I own a Hike Lite Huon Tent ( which are great) but when it comes time to replace it through fair wear and tear, I am going to replace it with a Blackwolf Dragonfly.

Most of my camping is hunting, fishing, motorbikes, 4x4 , Camper Trailers etc so the light Camping went a bit to back burner, but hoping to change that with more Kayak Camping.

Cheers

These look like a great setup for bush camping etc. but I do a lot of beach camping and throw in a bit of wind with a whole lot of sand and no real sides to a tarp setup, and it's a recipe for an uncomfortable night. I have gone the tarp only trips before and probably will in the future when the wife and kids aren't involved but like the added protection of a tent.

I've been bush many times with a shelter and no walls, in the Army we had "Hoochies" which you would set up pretty low to the ground. I've seen some Kiwi hunting gear catalogues showing a Hoochie which is closed at one end.

I am going a bit more with comfort these days so 4 walls and a roof is the order of the day.

Cheers

Tarp camping in the bush is great, but beach or outback (sand red or white) not so good. Flying critters can also get pretty nasty on the patience in these areas as well, hammocks or light weight tents are the way to go (not that I have used one in years).
Happy sailing/fishing
