Welcome to Kayak Reviews!

Postby Davey G » Fri Jul 17, 2009 11:59 am

With the recent re-shuffle of our forum index, we have now created this specific section of the site where owners of kayaks can submit "reviews' of their kayaks for the benefit of other members who may be seeking a new/upgrade kayak.

This section will not be to showcase rigged / pimped kayaks (theres other areas of the site for that). It will be an information resource only, and as such we'd like all reports to contain the following information:-

Make/Model of Kayak
Length/Weight of Kayak
Approximate Price (New/Used)
Key Features / Layout
Allround 'Fishability'
Ability to Customise/Accessorise
Best Aspects
Worst Aspects
Conditions best suited to (Estuary/Offshore/Rivers)
Overall score out of 10

We encourage members to submit reports on their own craft, or those craft you may have had experience in paddling. Any reviewer should have had several trips out in the kayak to be reviewed (ideally in a range of conditions) before submitting a review. Dealers/sponsored anglers are also welcome to submit reports on their craft however these will be marked clearly "Sponsored Angler/Dealer Review" so that there is no confusion or accusations of bias.

As with everything, we suggest that members do their own research before commiting to the purchase of any kayak model, however hopefully this section of the site will help thiose who want information straight from the horses/owners mouths in one easy-to-find location.

Thanks, and happy paddling.

My old town loon 111 camo. I have had it now for about 4 weeks and im stoked with it. iv been out in it about 9 times and paddled long km in it.I only fish rivers and bays as i have a boat to fish out side.I like the sit in yak's so i stay dry.the loon 111 has plenty of room for people on the large size as im 6ft 4 and about 107 kg. It tracks straght and very stable. the seat is ajustabul and quite comfy with no added padding. Its very easy to get in and out with the very open cockpit.its light and very easy to load onto my racks.at $1145 its quite cheep. the only down fall is it scratches easy,i gess ill have to stop paddeling over oyster racks, all in all its fast stable and very fishabul. sorry no pic's i have to learn how to post them up soon :D

My Yaks Crap
It takes so long to pack
Lifting it makes my back go 'crack'
And it cost more than a tonne of smack

It can't go fast, but geez it can go slow
did I mention all the 'dough' ?
'cause there's still more bucks I owe !

And as for all the words
I've could use for that plastic loo
well it really goes without saying
I can't 'em use in this review
:)

Whatever happened to the Tryak?

Postby Occy » Fri Nov 27, 2009 12:57 pm

I met Owen Griffin inventor of the Tryak (the pull apart plastic SOT which appeared in the New Inventors in 2007) yesterday, and took one of the latest production versions for a short paddle on the LCR. I have written a review which is with the moderators as we speak, but in the meantime take a look at a few shots I took.

Bloody hell I had forgotten all about this thread (obviously it didn't really go anywhere) and the Tryak. Thanks for the prompt, I must find out how Owen is going with this thing.

I'd also like to know how the tryak is going. Since i read this thread when it was first posted ive noticed a couple of other "break down" multi part kayaks, but i think the tryak looks to be a step above in quality.
I wonder if he would be able to make a cockpit the takes the mirage drive of a hobie.

Hello everyone,

I am Vlad from Perth and I have Hobie Pro Angler 14.
Lenght 4.17m
Width around 0.95m
Weight fully rigged around 65kg
Price $3750 new, $2500+ second hand(depends what's included eg fish finder, motor, triler ect)
Ultimate fishing mashine, thats how I call my kayak. Its just have space for everything u need for a fishing adventure. Very clever storage ideas, seat that keep your bum dry, pain free and allows you to spend hours on the water. You can even stand up for a strech if needed. I use mine for ocean and river fising I also install an extra seat at the back for my wife and we go together quite often. Some people find difficult to load Pro Angler on a car but i dont know why, because when u take all the staff from the yak it weigth just over 40kg, and u have to lift around 20kg at the time as u loading one side at the time. Rack and roll is handy thing. I load mine on my van witch is higher than sedan and have no problem loading and unloading by myself.
New version of Pro Angler 14 has just arrived to Australia Its got improved tackle box, steering control and very cool seat also used on PA12.Based on my expirience I would recomend this yak to everyone if u want a bit lighter version there is a PA12 which is a little brother of PA14.

Hi I've a jackson coosa
12ft 30kg
new $1600 plus I paid $1150 for a 6 week old one
Fishability is great as it was designed as a stand up fishing kayak with all the whistles and bells built in,Its great for lake and rivers which is where i do most of my fishing)but I wouldn't be to keen to go to far off shore
Since I've had it I've fitted a condor fish finder + a tripple rod holder set up + a anchor set up incorperating a cooper anchor
Best aspects are ajustable hight seat ,stability, rod stagers, general fishability and build quality (American made not chinese)
worst aspects ,badly effected by wind ,not as fast as my old yak (moken 13) and a little bit heavy for a 12 footer
Overall Its the best yak arround for what I need ,I can load it on and off the van racks on my own, its easy to launch, comfortable to fish out of all day if need be and perfect for fly fishing out of (which a lot of yaks arnt)because of the ability to stand up and cast.
So would I recommend it to others , well yes if your a lake, river or Estuary fisher but I certainly wouldn't want to venture too far of shore in anything but a slight swell
68cm Saratoga( 45cm bass-as from today 21/10/12 46cm).
aim in life is to fly fish more, kayak fish more and generally behave like a ageing old fart shouldent
