alcbb's Viking Tempo

Postby alcbb » Sat Jan 23, 2010 4:14 pm

hello.
My tempo is finally here and of course it arrives on my first day back at work after christmas. yay :( :( :(

first thing to make is a trolley so i can move it around. some old pram wheels and a bit of 25mm and 20mm galv steel electrical conduit and the compulsary pool noodle and i have a trolley.
Image

now this kayak has 2 purposes, fishing and family fun (my two boys fit in the front and back) so everything needs to be able to come out quickly and easily.

mount my berkley rod holders & got a sistema 2 compartment box with some chopping board stuck to the lid for a bait board.
this will have elastic over the top when i get some more cleats to hold it down. i may have to turn the rod holder bases up the other way as yet as they are close to intefering with paddling. cant really ssay until it hits the water.
Image

next is some rocket launchers and a box. I made a 20mm electrical conduit thing up so it locks into the scupper holes and i have a piece of elastic across the front to hold it down.
rocket launchers are a cut down alloy bullbar rod mount i had in the shed from years ago.

also popped a rod leash from an old boogey board that was floating around in the shed.

also made a side mount roof loader for the rola roof racks on my patrol which has been a challenge as it has a lift and big tyres so the roof is very high to say the least.

more photos to come

the list of things to do is:
fit sounder/battery/lights
make moulded hard cover for the front well from fibreglass for my bait/fish bin and when i go camping with it.
I have also autocadded up a outboard/rudder pedal system which i can get Laser cut & CNC machined from black nylon.
if anyone is interested i maybe will be able to supply drawings and a file for a profile cutter to make your own.

but first i want to put it in the water and give it a go! Glenelg river here I come!

after its first trip i have decided i need to change a few things

1. the trolley is too hard to get under the yak and locate the holes by myself in the dark. need to rethink that

2. my roof loader works well (side load) and i can easily manage it (im 5'10" and built like a stick insect with an eating disorder)

3. tackle box is best in the back leaving the scooped out hole for bait

4. i need a cover for the front so i have somehere to keep bait/fish

5. the standard pedal S U C K S A R S E. its more effective at wetting the paddler than moving the yak.

6. tempos seriously need a rudder so you dont run down mcbigg accidently japanese whaling boat/andy gill style. (one on the way) see http://www.akff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=35867

Lookin good alcbb, is it paddling technique (getting used to new craft) + crapy paddle or does it just turn like the Queen Mary?

Im sure if u get rid of the pool noodles on the trolly this will fix the location problem .

i have no pool noodles on mine and they slip in very easy

yes they need a rudder viewtopic.php?f=12&t=23089 this is what i did .

the standard rudder i think are to small and overpriced so i didnt order on when i got my yak .

the paddle i have is the standard scoop type and i do not have a problem with it . it has collars at each end to stop water dripping on me .

i also bought this yak so i could take my kids along as well .

craig

oh and do the fishing rods get in the way of your stroke as they seem a bit close to the paddle position ?????

Agree with Craig and remove the noodle, I only have plastic tubing on my scupper cart and gives a lot more play on entry and no scupper damage after about 3 years use.....also find it helps to lift out the box before inserting the cart so the scuppers can be seen from above when installing in place, then drop it back in place to move to the car.

the pool noodles are only a padded washer for it to sit on, they dont extend into the scupper.
my problem was i was trying to put the cart on in the dark on a slippery boat ramp with a yak full of stuff.

i will lower it a fair bit to make the lift easier. failing that i have another idea :)

I'm going with a stainless steel version of the hobie sailing rudder at this stage.. will chop it out on the guillo tommorrow if i get a spare minute.
need to make some pedals up as well. mounting bracket is looking the goods but havent had a chance to test fit.

can anyone recommend a decent paddle?

While you are chopping it down a bit, I reckon it is an advantage for the yaks keel to sit on a cart cross bar to take the weight, and there is less strain on the scuppers.

just on the paddle

its like a scoop and seems too short for the very wide tempo so it has to be put in more vertically than normal.
when you do this the scooped part of the paddle drops about 100ml of water on you every stroke.

AWESOME

Ive got another in the shed from my old fibreglass kayak. will give that a go next time an use the quantam on the old narrow yak instead

that easy enough dodge. will do that while im at it. might also stick some smaller wheels on.
had no issues fitting the trolley in the daylight with nothing in the yak
