PPB Mordialloc trip:the snapper that got away!

Postby lionfish » Mon Dec 07, 2009 8:38 am

After a few snapperless weeks I went out this morning at 5.30am. The shallow waters have been given me nothin’ so I headed to the horizon off Mordialloc.

Good plan: it worked. My bright golden deep diver had me onto a lovely fish at 6.25am. I actually thought it was a stingray at first the way it was fighting. It is the first fish that I’ve really felt on the arms.

Just as I got a good look at the lovely red scales in the sun – and as soon as the snapper saw the hull - it put in one last ditched fight and shook its head. It snapped my line.

The line snapped half way down the trace from the swivel. Perhaps the line had been nicked from a lure hook from a previous trip?

I was fishing with 10lb mono.

My technique is to basically reel the sucker in as fast as I can. Is there more ‘technique’ that would have stopped this from happening?

Suggestions and learnings most welcome! It was a very sad and lonely 1 hour paddle back in…

Lionfish
Hmmmmmm, Where to start.
Firstly if fishing for big reds I use 40lb leader after losing three fish to 20lb this year.

Secondly once the hooks are set enjoy the moment. Let the fish run as long as you have a tight line. Pump and wind but always allow the fish to pull drag - this tires it out which helps when it sees the hull. Also you get to enjoy the real pleasure of fishing - the catching part.

It's rare for a snapper to be taken by a shark ( more likely a seal ) so it's not going anywhere.

Interesting this year - they seem to be out deep this year.

I'm sure there are others out there with more experience than me who can offer advice but my tactic when fishing very light tackle is:

Once the fish is close to the yak, loosen your drag.

If you let it run and pull drag during the initial fight, they usually have one last run in them once they see your hull (as you found out) and it's usually a short sharp run that puts a lot of pressure on line/knots etc. Loosening the drag minimises the risk of line breaking, hooks pulling, knots breaking etc. As long as you don't have to worry about the fishing heading for nearby structure, letting the fish run with light drag will get that last bust of energy out of them and make for an easy netting once they re-surface.

And most importantly, Don't rush.
