Sail for Adventure

Postby hollgi » Mon May 11, 2009 5:41 pm

I spend some time to Make up a sail for my Adventure HSE. The Sailcloth comes from my old Klepper fold-able kayak, the rest are either new parts or heavily modified.(inclusive the mast).
Not quite as good as the original Hobie, and no where near the Adventure Island, but still good enough to have some fun while saving for an Island upgrade..

Hi Hollgi
Can I ask what materials you used? What's the area of the sail? What's the $ damage?
Tempted to make one for my fat blob outback :D

Well I have to give it a good test next week then I know more.
Costs 25$ ( for the mast, which is a extend able Ali-tent pole 22/25mm diameter).
I had the sailcloth from my old double. The original mast was made by wood and approximately 50 mm in diameter.
The rest i found somewhere in the shed.
To be honest- I have no idea how many square meter I've got there.
Maybe! I could compete with the original sail ( in performance) but no way that I would even come close to the Island.
Amas are a great advantage, no doubt! (so is the bigger sail of the AI !)
Some more pic's.

Nice setup Hollgi, Maddogmatt is running the Hobie sail on his Adventure and having great results I believe, I think he also uses a dagger-board that makes it more controlable. Hope he spots this thread and can shed some more light.
If you could make a weighted keel for the mirage slot, WooHoo look out Sydney to Hobart    .
Look forward to seeing how Maddogmatts performs at our up and coming sailing day viewtopic.php?f=44&t=27124.
I do not know a lot about sailing but I think having the boom may be an advantage re performance over the Hobie sail, specially when trying to sail close into the wind, as you can control sail tension better via the boom tension and the use of a vang ((soft sail, soft breeze)(tight sail, strong winds)).
Someone with more knowledge, please correct me if I am wrong.
Anyway, look forward to your updates on its performance and hope someone can get some video of you on the water shooting the breeze.
Happy sailing/fishing
Eddie

It is the secret ingredient which makes it faster!!
(others simply call it reflective tape, black in daylight, reflects white at night, but don't tell anybody..)
