so then we cut out some aluminium that my father inlaw had lying around aproxamatly 140mm wide and 270mm long and bent it

We then added some nylon supports which doubled as conectors

attached with stainless screws

we then attached a right angle because we needed a tight bend and the aluminium could not bend this tight

hmmm is this going to work

added some more nylon

arhhh this going to work

Then went to work on the pedals

rudder pictures 3 009 (Small).jpg
this is the semmy finished product

cut out some pedals and attached to 2 brass hinges per side .bolted through to aluminium plate suports inside the yak .

drilled 2 holes for the stearing rope [ 4 mm spectra ]and tubing and 2 holes at the back for exeting ropes. also attached rubber matting front and back to waterproof entry and exit stearing holes .

rudder pictures 3 008 (Small).jpg
notice the tubing

added some turn buckles [ not needed ]and some heavy shock cord to the pedals so that pedals atomatically return to centre

rudder pictures 3 010 (Small).jpg
just needs a tidy up

this project took over 3 days to compleat ,at a cost of about $20 [spectra]as everything else came out of my and my inlaws garage.

it works an absolute treat
can turn on itself at slow speeds and holds the yak in a strong wind ,ive even tested it under sail and it all good

cheers

We also used a 16 mm [ ithink] stainless tubeing through the back support holes .with a stainless screw thread running through the middle . this is 10mm longer than the tubing , the result is there is NO presure on the suport holes as you can see in the photos the nuts are locked on the tubing not on the yak.

The rudder also tilts up and back down ie if it hits a rock it symply slides up and over the back into position again.

the red rope you see attached to the rudder in 1 of the photos is a means of lifting the rudder up and locking it out of the way .the rope has a stainless carrabeena at the end which simply clips onto the panic rope which is all reached from the cockpit .
