I reckon the cassons off Glenelg produces enough fish to keep a kayak fisherman interested in snapper - theres good structure, food (mussels), its close to shore and in the absence of snapper theres still a good chance of tangling with salmon and bream - pick the right tides and conditions and you're in with a chance. Some very good fish get taken in that area.
Yak PB's: Snapper - 68cm, 11 lb; Snook - 94cm; Bream - 46cm; Mulloway - 63cm; King George whiting - 47cm; Australian salmon 68cm, 8lb;

I'm on the side of the naysayers in this one. I fished there with my brother one pre-dawn in swelly conditions and he fell overboard!!! We didn't get anything and it was a long way out. The seabreeze can come on very strong very suddenly down that way and I reckon we are asking for trouble.

For the adventurous, I have a spot about 500m off shore towards the bottom of Yorkes where I have pulled 20lb snapper in a boat, pre-kayak. If anyone is up for a 3am start, we drive over, hit the spot for a few hours (or longer) then drive home. All in one day and much less risk. However, the snapper won't start running through there until around the beginning of May so we have a few months to wait it out.

In the meantime, I'm up for sneaky spot!

Fisher is right on the money for this one guys. The Barges is no place to be for the inexperienced without ALL the right equiptment. I have had large White pointers around the boat out there on a number of occasions and if I was to kayak and fish for Snapper (and I wouldn't) there I would atleast have some one I know in a boat very close by in case anything does go wrong. You won't get many second chances with Whites if they happen to want a fish that you hooked and are trying to get into the kayak , they just come and take it, so if your in the way , bad luck. I have had a few taken at the gaff so I am talking from experience. It's scary enough in a stink boat when this happens so I wouldn't like to have it happen when I'm that close to the water. It's up to you blokes but if it was me I'd be rethinking it.

At the gaff fishnut? I'm thinking that would mean they'd have no issues poking their heads out the water while we haul a snapper over the side?

L3GACY,
If there are any reports of sharks at that spot in the weeks prior to you going, I would seriously consider postponing the trip. That is some big water out there and a sting ray flap ain't gonna help ya if the sh#t hits the fan mate. All I can say mate is be extra smart and consider your options. Hope this helps.
Cheers Darren

The stingray idea was a joke :P. If i did do it i wouldnt use a flap, i'd use a 4 foot eagle :P. There havent been any white pointers out there reported to my local tackle shop when he had a few a week last summer, that doesnt mean they're not there though, because they will be.

This sounds a bit like hubris.

I'm going to lock this thread with the advice:

"South Australians are crazy, but this sounds REALLY crazy."

Again - complaints?

Write your member of Parliament.
