Hi Guys, time for a wrap up of the 2nd round of the KFT TT Lures/Ocean Kayak Gold Coast Series 1. Early Sunday morning 38 avid kayak fisho's gathered at Pelican Beach on the Gold Coast for the 2nd round of KFT's first ever series. The target species was Bream with a catch limit of 5 the challenge was on due to plenty of freshwater in the system. Each competitor had their own game plan and a combination of recent rain and 16kn winds had many anglers change tactics to suit the conditions.
After a quick breakfast from Bonza Banga charity BBQ's the air horn sounded and two thirds of the field headed with the incoming tide up the Nerang River to fish rock walls, canals, pylons and some natural structure while the remainder of the field headed against the tide to find some clean water with less fresh on the surface. The field of kayaks seen all sizes, styles and composition from entry level through to sleek fibreglass speed machines, but the common element that bonded the field was a good vibe and each angler willing to look after each other and land a few Bream.
In total 14 legal Bream were caught and measured with a mixed bag of other species testing some anglers using ultra light tackle, what tempted the Bream was as varied as the tactics employed by each angler. Some were landed on the surface with bright colours while others were tempted with lightly weighted soft plastics in natural colours. The trend seen the larger Bream take the natural SP's down deep while smaller but legal fish aggressively attacked the bright coloured surface lures. Ultralight flurocarbon main line worked well for some anglers with 1/20th jig heads and natural coloured SP's accounting for the larger Bream.
Nine anglers filled the top ten place getters and after a tough round 1 Robbie Wells again took out 1st place in round 2 with two Bream measured for a total length of 53.3cm, KFT new comer Terry Hitzke took home 2nd place with two fish and a total length of 53.3cm also, the decider was the angler who had the largest Bream took the honours and Robbie Wells had a solid fish of 30.1cm, Luke Ceccato earned 3rd place with two fish and a total length of 25.4cm. From 4th position to 9th position each angler recorded one Bream each, 4th went to Steven Fielding-Smith with a respectable 28.1cm specimen, 5th position went to David Salano with his 27.5cm catch, 6th went to Brett Thompson and a 26.8cm unit, 7th position had Shane Bird measuring in a 25cm fish, 8th was young Tyson Hayes with 24.2cm and last but not least was Sam Hitzke in 9th and his 23.2 specimen.
The BCF Big Bream went to Robbie Wells with an impressive 30.1cm Bream, a $200 Gift Card was Robbie's reward for his effort, the Ocean Kayak Pacific Angler Kayak was randomly drawn by Gary Fitzgerald from BLA and the very lucky angler was Robbie Wells.
