Postby ArWeTherYet » Wed Jan 28, 2009 6:23 pm

Round 2 of the KFT fishing comp is on Sunday the 22nd of February at Pelican Beach, Waterways Dr. Main Beach Gold Coast.

$40 Entry fee, $5000 worth of prizes, catch photograph and release (no livewell) etc...... see the rules and details for yourself here. http://www.kft.net.au/

Who's going to this one?

I heard the last one went fantasticly and there were heaps of prizes given out. :D

Seems Queensland is blessed with plenty of kayak fishing options on the 22/2...... KFT comp, the Hobie/ABT comp, even ECKFC are having a camp at a secret location in Northern NSW (I was going to go until I heard it was clothing optional  ) ........and if thats not good enough AJD and anyone else who wants to go with him, is heading to Lake Awoonga to chase the Barra......WOW  ....What to do. :?

im down there that weekend so might go though am fairly crap at catching bream. u dont need a livewell do you paul.
and are hobies allowed , if not i could always get my sit in back and dust it off. wish theyd make em all edible species cause i know where to catch whiting and flathead down that way. the bream seem to be caught from around the 1.2 million pontoons down there and ive never done that style of fishing as it doesnt feel like your in the great outdoors, it always feels like youd be invading someones privacy

cheers you should catch some massive bream on that 80 mm blue spoonbill mate.

No Livewell required, just a digital camera with a removable memory card and a brag mat. Take a photo of the fish on the brag mat, throw the fish back or kill it and keep it for dinner, and hand in the memory card at the end of fishing, so they can put the photo on there computer and hand you the card back. It makes it easier for them if you delete all other photos on the card before you start.

Yes mate you can pedal or paddle or do both. No trolling, just cast and retrieve.

I believe they organised a charity to do the catering this time so you'll be able to get a bite to eat and something to drink this time.

Hopefully someone who knows more about this event will come on and put up more info, or you could look at there web site and email any questions you have to the organisers.
.

Pete I havent targeted Bream for yonks, but with all the crap weather lately I think I'll be dusting off my 1-3kg flick stick, 1000 Stradic with the 3lb crystal line and I got some 4lb Seagar leader (good time to use up the Vanish ;-) ) lying around somewhere and just bought a pack of 2" baby shrimp Gulps (glorified dead bait  )......so watch out Bream. :D

So do you know this area well?.....got any tips?

Az Awoonga looks good, not sure if I will have the time to get up there yet.

paul i was snorkeling once around the rockwall at the northern end of wavebreak island, around bream spawning (jees it was cold) and the water was absolutely thick with them.
i would think the seway wall (southside) would be good depending on the tides. always see many new australians there loading up on 23.1 cm bream.
around the back of seaworld where they have water discharge from there aquarium there are often big bream hanging around. also in the main marina there are heaps that people feed but i dont think you can fish in there. if i go ill probably just go to some weedbanks in front of labrador if the tide is high.
i know you have a sounder and i remember last time we were drifting around in the boat upstream of the sundale bridge (opposite the southport school )there were some rocky reefy bits out in the midle of the nerang river. you might be able to find those with the sounder.
going skiing down there sat so i will have a bit of a look.
cheers pete

Hi guys, we have just posted up a wrap up of round 1 here in this forum and it gives a great idea of what to expect from this fun tournament that is jammed full of awesome prizes from our premium sponsors. You will be able to view images from round 1 at the official KFT website at http://www.kft.net.au and see what some of the guys and girls got up too. Round 2 is shaping up to be jammed packed and strategies and techniques are being nutted out.

KFT have official measure boards that are handed out in the morning which your Bream will be photographed on using your digital camera, if possible could memory cards be empty prior to the event to enable us to have as fast as possible measure in.

This round our charity BBQ (Bonza Banga) will be there to feed the masses with breakfast and lunch on offer plus we will have shade and cold bottles of water for all competitors. Get your entries in early to lock in your spot to share in over $5000 worth of prizes (each round).

Cheers,

Hi Guys, time for a wrap up of the 2nd round of the KFT TT Lures/Ocean Kayak Gold Coast Series 1. Early Sunday morning 38 avid kayak fisho's gathered at Pelican Beach on the Gold Coast for the 2nd round of KFT's first ever series. The target species was Bream with a catch limit of 5 the challenge was on due to plenty of freshwater in the system. Each competitor had their own game plan and a combination of recent rain and 16kn winds had many anglers change tactics to suit the conditions.

After a quick breakfast from Bonza Banga charity BBQ's the air horn sounded and two thirds of the field headed with the incoming tide up the Nerang River to fish rock walls, canals, pylons and some natural structure while the remainder of the field headed against the tide to find some clean water with less fresh on the surface. The field of kayaks seen all sizes, styles and composition from entry level through to sleek fibreglass speed machines, but the common element that bonded the field was a good vibe and each angler willing to look after each other and land a few Bream.

In total 14 legal Bream were caught and measured with a mixed bag of other species testing some anglers using ultra light tackle, what tempted the Bream was as varied as the tactics employed by each angler. Some were landed on the surface with bright colours while others were tempted with lightly weighted soft plastics in natural colours. The trend seen the larger Bream take the natural SP's down deep while smaller but legal fish aggressively attacked the bright coloured surface lures. Ultralight flurocarbon main line worked well for some anglers with 1/20th jig heads and natural coloured SP's accounting for the larger Bream.

Nine anglers filled the top ten place getters and after a tough round 1 Robbie Wells again took out 1st place in round 2 with two Bream measured for a total length of 53.3cm, KFT new comer Terry Hitzke took home 2nd place with two fish and a total length of 53.3cm also, the decider was the angler who had the largest Bream took the honours and Robbie Wells had a solid fish of 30.1cm, Luke Ceccato earned 3rd place with two fish and a total length of 25.4cm. From 4th position to 9th position each angler recorded one Bream each, 4th went to Steven Fielding-Smith with a respectable 28.1cm specimen, 5th position went to David Salano with his 27.5cm catch, 6th went to Brett Thompson and a 26.8cm unit, 7th position had Shane Bird measuring in a 25cm fish, 8th was young Tyson Hayes with 24.2cm and last but not least was Sam Hitzke in 9th and his 23.2 specimen.

The BCF Big Bream went to Robbie Wells with an impressive 30.1cm Bream, a $200 Gift Card was Robbie's reward for his effort, the Ocean Kayak Pacific Angler Kayak was randomly drawn by Gary Fitzgerald from BLA and the very lucky angler was Robbie Wells.

Over $5000 worth of prizes was given away in round 2 courtesy from our sponsors including TT Lures, Ocean Kayaks, Berkley, Mako Eyewear, Ecogear, BCF, EvaKool Ice Boxes, Columbia Sportswear, Platypus, Gary Howard Custom Fishing Rods, Sea to Summit, Fish On films, Pflueger, Solution paddles, MTI PFD's, Fishing Monthly, AFN, Atomic and Fish Off Wipes.

A big thank you goes out to all competitors and the feedback has been very positive with a great vibe and knowledge shared by all, a special thank you goes out to our very generous sponsors for their support in the KFT TT Lures/Ocean Kayak Gold Coast Series 1 and Bonza Banger Charity BBQ's for providing hot food and cold drinks for all the hungry and thirsty yakkers.

Cheers,
Shane
